As you all probably know by now, I’m not a big believer in fashion rules. I’m for the most part of the opinion that if you like something and feel fabulous in it, then by all means go for it. With that being said, there are a few exceptions, things that I feel are more of a crime against humanity as opposed to a fashion rule. My big one would be leggings as pants…come on people, if they were pants then they would be called…pants. No one wants to see your bum in fine detail (well, someone hopefully does, but not the world at large). Another is yoga pants. They too leave very little to the imagination. Seriously, I don’t want to know you that intimately. And finally, sandals with socks. I mean really, doesn’t that kinda defeat the purpose of sandals?
My gorgeous bloggy friend Alice from Happiness At Midlife and I were discussing the socks with sandals concept last week. The idea was kind of starting to grow on both of us, but it was a scary huge leap for me from crime against humanity to cool slightly rebellious fashion statement. We decided to try a joint venture; a fashion experiment if you will. We would try rocking the sandals with socks look and then both post it on our blogs. The funny thing is, we didn’t consult each other on exactly how we were styling the look. But when it was all said and done, Alice went with a slightly dressier version, which is more her style and I went the more casual route. I think it worked out well so you get a taste of it both ways.
I ended up really digging it, although I don’t know that I’ll be doing it on a regular basis. Alice looks fabulous in her skirt and blazer, and I think I did alright with the jeans and graphic tee look. There are a few things to keep in mind if you’re going to try this at home kids. First of all, I think the sandal needs to be of the chunkier more covered variety similar to the pairs both Alice and I wore. I personally don’t believe it would read well with a skinny strappy sandal. I went with a thicker sock and Alice’s was thinner. Each works, but again keep in mind the style of sandal you’re pairing the sock with. My sandal had more coverage which worked with the chunkier sock. Finally, this is one of those fashion statements you totally have to own. If you’re going to do it, then rock it for all your worth. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart.
Definitely take the time to hop over to Happiness At Midlife and read Alice’s thoughts on our little experiment. I think we both learned something new and enjoyed collaborating during the process.
