Blue Velvet Boots & Mixed Print Kimono: #BloggerProblems

Blue velvet boots, mixed print kimono and skinny jeans.

In the big picture of life, blogger problems aren’t really problems per se…

THE STORY

…But I suppose they are if you’re a blogger. For me, the weather is my primary problem. For example, the day that I took these shots it was raining. As in actually raining as I was taking them. Hence the somewhat hazy shots, and what appears to be a permanent case of resting bitch face. Let’s just pretend I was going for a dark moody look here, okay?

For weeks on end it was simply too cold to take shots for fear my camera would disintegrate into dust. Then there are the days when the sun is shining, but there aren’t yet leaves on the trees to offer up some shade so the photos end up getting blown out. And friends, don’t even get me started on the wind…

I’m getting better at shooting with indoor lighting, but my indoor options are minimal. I did do some shots a few months back in the school cafeteria, but it’s um…a middle school cafeteria and there are only so many ways to get creative with it. There is absolutely nowhere in my house that works due to space and really bad lighting, so outdoor shots are my best option.

And how about those times that you take a plethora of shots, they look good on the tiny camera screen, but then you load them onto your computer and whoa…seriously, w.t.h. happened? Who is that in those photos? Did I seriously walk around all day looking like that? Why did no one mention the big smear of gray eye shadow along my cheekbone that looked like someone had landed a solid left hook?

A few weeks back I did some shots sitting on a park bench. I was pretty damn confident that I nailed it…oh yes, these are going to be some stellar shots I thought to myself. Well, myself was very incorrect. Not only had I failed to notice my coat just lying there in a heap next to me, I also failed to notice that when I sat down I didn’t adjust my skirt and it was all bunched up under my butt so my entire thigh was showing. How does that even happen??

I suppose it’s a good thing that I don’t take myself too seriously because if nothing else, at least I got a good laugh out of it. And at the end of the day my minor blogger problems are nothing more than just silly nonsense. Real life is what’s important…even if I’m living it with eye shadow smeared on my face and my skirt stuck under my butt.

THE OUTFIT

This month I was in charge of the Ageless Style Link Up theme and decided that “It’s All In The Details” sounded like a good idea. For me, that is how I typically put together an outfit. I start with the basics; whether that be a skirt and sweater, pants and a top or, like today, jeans and a tee shirt. I thought it would be fun to see all of the creative ways my Ageless Style sisters used extras like jewelry, shoes and accessories to take a look from basic to standout.

I started with my favorite base…jeans and a tee shirt, in this case, a graphic tee. I actually built this whole look around these killer blue velvet boots that I scored on clearance at JCPenney. I mean seriously friends, these boots alone are an outfit maker. If the blue velvet isn’t mouthwatering enough check out the heel…a bedazzled butterfly! Butterflies are my spirit animal, so believe me, I was all in when I saw these babies. I’m pretty sure that you could pair them with a burlap sack and still look fabulous.

Ahhh…but I wasn’t done yet. Next I added my bright and wild mixed print kimono. This is one of my favorites in my kimono collection, although the the last time I wore it was in the Summer with a black slip dress. As you can see though, whether it be a simple dress or a basic pair of jeans and a tee shirt, a kimono makes all the difference between basic and extra.

THE TIP

Here’s my simple formula for getting dressed in the morning: Basics+Shoes+Extra Piece(s)=Killer Outfit. It’s as simple as that. Your extra piece or pieces can be anything from a kimono, jacket, vest or cardigan to a beautiful scarf, statement jewelry or a beautiful bag.

This kimono is amazing and I love how you paired with a graphic tee. Debbie you just always crack me up with your total honesty. The weather has definitely been a bitch lately for trying to grab some outfit shots. I’m so excited about daylight savings time returning this next week. I seriously get so pissed so many times when I load pictures I think are going to be awesome and they are all blury as hell. One place I have found that makes a good location on a rainy day is a parking garage…especially if you can find one… Read more »

those boots are amazing and hello first world blogger problems. My latest playing with my settings and forgetting I left it on manual and wondering why I cannot get a non blurry shot, for two whole days oops. then the Rain and cold and snow…. the list is endless plus I allow myself maybe 10 minutes a day for outfit pics so hello major issues.

Debbie, first of all, thank you so much for inviting me to join this month! And for your super kind words. I am so honored to call you friend as well. And here’s the funny part…I was totally going to go with jeans and tee shirt for this theme. And I was most likely going to add a kimono (Because, I mean, I only have accumulated about 75 by this point). And killer shoes are always a must for taking any outfit to the next level. So needless to say, but I will say it anyway, your outfit is freaking… Read more »

First, thanks for the great theme Debbie. What a great post to be my initial soiree into Ageless Style Group. You have the most fun edgy look. Love the mix of prints and textures. I feel ya’ on the wind and sun issues. It seems to stay pretty windy where I live and makes getting decent shots a real chore. Happy Tuesday!

Girl….you had me cracking up at the antics that blogging photos create. And I know all of them. How about lipstick on my teeth. For a Chico’s audition video—really??? Ugh….but it’s all silly in the end, right? And it makes such great stories!! Luckily we can laugh at ourselves. My house is the same way—no real great place to take photos–although if I spent some time and energy, I probably could make the office work. But I’d want to add some fun to the walls, and get creative…and who has time for that, LOL??? But I digress—let’s talk about your… Read more »

You chose a fabulous theme for this month and I had such fun interpreting it! Had to laugh about the blogger problems, because they are too real, especially this time of year. I would have never thought to pair a graphic tee and kimono together, and yet you are showing me how fabulously they can work. Now those booties are giving all the fees. Love them!

I love this outfit! Don’t get me wrong, your photos in dresses and skirts are great, but I am really partial to the outfits where you combine jeans and boots with a floral or velvet top layer. The combo of tough and tender with a touch of boho hits a sweet spot, in my opinion.

This was such a fun theme! Thanks for picking it, Debbie.

Your story about the blog pictures made me giggle. I have so been there. My biggest issue is my face. I’ll think I’m smizing but it’s total *insert horror movie music here*. Sometimes I’ve even tried to help myself out by playing comedies while I shoot. LOL

I absolutely adore those booties. I share your love of butterflies – I even have a tattoo. That outfit is killer. Love it.

Oh, I feel ya on the blurry, dark, bunched-up skirts, stained tee, dirty face, crazy hair pictures, my friend. Winter is the worst for picture taking. But Good News! Just a few more weeks and the snow SHOULD be over, the winds SHOULD die down, the mud SHOULD dry up, the trees WILL leaf out again…Blogger Season will return 🙂

Whoa, who AM I, with this uncharacteristic optimism??

Debbie, I know this well! It has been raining alot around here lately and I tell my hubby we have to run out in between raindrops.. my husband will have to tell me to smile.. as i am probably cranky thinking the pictures will be crappy. Anyhow, I have had shots were my purse was on backward, those kind of things. Love your kimono, such a colorful print and looks perfect with thos cute velvet booties. very rock and roll!
thanks for linking!

Debbie,

I think the weather has ruined a lot of bloggers style posts!
I agree with you though, just when you think it’s a perfect shot, something goes wrong and you either crop it out or put the flawed photo on the blog.

Until I get a professional photographer who catches all my mistakes, I shall gladly submit less than perfect shots.

Hugs,
Robin

Those boots are just amazing Debbie! I love your kimono too! The weather has been a pain in the ass for me too – it just started raining when I did my last lot of photos and my husband refused to take any on manual focus. I was a bit disappointed with them but didn’t like to say…he might go on strike!

Beautiful kimono, and pics, Debbie. I feel your pain about indoor shots – even in Florida, they look sad. You really shine in pink, my friend, xox

I always find that my best full outfit shot features the weirdest facial expression of the entire shoot. You do have to get really creative in the cold. I love those boots, especially with the butterfly detail on the back!
Thanks for joining the Thursday Moda Link-up!
