Cable Knit Sweater & Fringe Scarf: Retail Attitude Adjustment

First a disclaimer and some good news. All of the snow in these pictures? Gone. Capital G-O-N-E, gone. Granted, we’re left with a barren swampland and a small pond in the middle of the backyard, but hey, there’s no snow. And that makes me a very happy girl. Now, onto the topic at hand. I made the half hour road trip to the real mall today and stopped by Ulta to exchange an eyeliner and spend my gift card that my adopted mom got me for my birthday. The charming young lady that waited on me had all of the personality of a hexenbiest. If you’re not sure what a hexenbiest is, google it. Trust me, it is not a compliment.

Perhaps it is just my Ulta, but every time (and I mean every time) I have been in there the employees are the most obnoxiously condescending bunch of people I’ve ever encountered in one place. Is there some secret training Ulta employees go through where they learn to act like they are the end all be all of the makeup world? I mean seriously, you sell eyeshadow for a living. At minimum wage. I could maybe see the attitude if one were performing brain surgery or curing cancer on a daily basis, but um, your expertise is in the area of which foundation matches my skin tone.  And no, don’t get your panties in a bunch thinking that I’m talking smack on retail employees. I worked in retail and waitressed for a good ten years of my life. I absolutely respect what they do, it can be a tough job.  But for that same reason I know how a customer is to be treated. I know this makes me sound like an old lady, but what ever happened to manners and just being polite and pleasant?

As you can tell from the snow in these shots, I wore this a few weeks back on an obviously very cold day that required multiple layers of flannel and fleece to survive. I have to say though the fringe scarf really does add an extra something to an otherwise blah cable knit sweater. It’s so easy to take a plain outfit and kick it up a notch with the right accessories. This same scarf also made all the difference here when I paired it with my plaid duster. The flannel shirt peeking out was for warmth, but it also added a small hit of color to make things more interesting. And while it’s true I won’t miss the snow at all, I will miss my Bearpaw boots when I have to send them to their seasonal attic exile.

I have worked retail and sometimes sales people have a hard day but I agree, bad attitude should not come around shoppers. Not at all. I have noticed that in general sales people that sell makeup are condescending. I have seen that happen several times at Sephora. Now I know they also make commission but that should be extra reason to be nice to those that are buying.

Yay for the snow being gone! We are getting closer and closer to no-snow territory here too – but I’m still waiting.
Lol at the Hexenbiest salesgirl. And Yay for you being a fellow Grimmster (honestly – it’s my fave show of ALL. TIME.) Back to the clothes – this is a super-cute outfit on you! I love that scarf! Have a great day Lovely!

I know what you mean. There’s an Ulta near me and the saleswomen there act the same way, which is unpleasant. Glad your snow is gone; we have mere wisps remaining.

So true so true. If you are an old lady, then I am an old lady. I just think some kids dont care. I used to work retail to o, and all we ask for is a little customer service without an attitude! Well, I bet you are glad the snow is gone, enough of that. Love the blue on you Deb, nice scarf, and your jeans look lovely! from the link up, please stop by, jess xx http://www.elegantlydressedandstylish.com Would love to see you at my first fashion link up Tues March 17 7AM Turning Heads Tuesday. It surprises me that staff can be like that to a memeber of the public. Competition is so hard these days so excellent customer service is crucial. Love your funky scarf Debbie!

So my sister worked for a short while as a stylist for Ulta. I can tell you why the employees are terrible…They.hate.working.there! They are not good to their employees. Her fiance asked her to quit because she was a grouch all the time since she started working at Ulta. It was dramatic the difference her job change made. She runs into other employees that moved on from working there and they all say how much happier they are.

I have the same experiences at the two Ulta’s I go to near me. I work in retail and I’m always surprised with all of the competition out there that they can slack in that area. Now to your outfit…That scarf is so fun! I love all of the layers with the plaid peaking out!

Ugghh I hate when I run into the completely unpleasant retail associates. Makes me nuts. I worked retail for around 10 years and was management, so I know what they have to go through BUT that being said your main function in the job is customer service. So basically your JOB is to be nice to people for a living. lol! uggh makes me crazy! Anyway, I love your fringe scarf! I have a similar one in red =)

I go through the same thing, sometimes I wonder are my expectations on service to high?? and then I think no I just expect service and a pleasant response and it is oh so rare lately. I am crying over snow,I so wish ours was gone. Loving the fringe scarf, and it does amp up the outfit.

Hah. My sister works in retail (she’s a shop manager) and she thinks like you. And more. She ain’t taking no bad attitude.

Love the fringe scarf, very unusual, very funky.

That scarf is definitely a nice touch to your winter outfit. I am sorry about your time at Ulta. I have been in there once but not purchased anything yet, so I hope they are not like that at the store near me. Maybe you should type up a review on their site, I hate when stores are like that. Thank you for linking this up to “Bloggers Who Have Inspired Me” yesterday.
