The theme of this month’s Ageless Style Link Up is “Second Time Around” and that really resonated with me…
THE STORY
…not only in regard to vintage or thrifted clothing, but in regard to life in general. So many people wish for do-overs; to make up for mistakes or errors in judgement from their pasts. I have been fortunate enough to get a second time around a few times in my life. The most important is the second time around I got with my husband. We were married to one another for a number of years, divorced for a period of time and now have been married to one another again for years. We lived. We learned. We were blessed with a second chance.
My relationship with my aunt who raised me after I lost my mom was another do-over I was lucky enough to have. Not everyone gets the opportunity that I had to not only mend fences, but to develop a deeper love and respect for someone who truly matters to us before they are gone forever. Sometimes though, a second time around teaches us tough lessons that perhaps we should have learned the first time around. We have to learn the hard and unavoidably painful way that even though someone is family in its purest definition, they quite simply don’t deserve to have us in their lives.
I’m also choosing to view this second half of my life as “a second time around” so to speak. I’ve been doing a lot of deep, introspective and sometimes difficult thinking lately and I’ve come to the conclusion that if not now, when? In light of the fact I’m turning 52 today I’m using it as a clean slate. I’m changing some sh*t; I am kicking ass and taking names. The time for complacency has passed. It’s time for my own personal second time around.
THE OUTFIT
What exactly is “second time around” worthy in today’s outfit? A couple of things actually. First off, the brooches on my jacket. All of them, with the exception of two, were either gifted to me or belonged to someone that I love who is no longer with me. They have meaning. They matter to me and I don’t wear them often enough. I’ve given them a permanent home on my new long denim jacket. I have several denim jackets, but they all are shorter and I really wanted a longer slouchier style so when I found this on sale at GAP I made it mine.
The cowboy boots are the second entry in my old mixed with new outfit. They are thisss close to being considered vintage. And anyone who owns a pair of cowboy boots can tell ya, the older they get, the better they get. They work with so many things, but I particularly love them with boho pieces like the tunic/skirt extender combo I have going on here.
THE TIP
Try mixing vintage pieces with newer items in your closet. It will give you a cool eclectic mix that you can be sure you’re not going to see on anyone else.
