I seriously cannot get my brain around the fact that it’s Thanksgiving week already…
THE STORY
…For real, how did that happen? We also had our first real snowfall yesterday which only increases my befuddlement. Wasn’t it just the 4th of July, I don’t know, like yesterday?
While I realize on a logical level that the passage of time is the same as it always been, I do believe there’s something to the belief that it seems to pass more quickly the older that you get. Why is that? Is it because as our chronological number increases so does our responsibilities, and we get so caught up in the day to day grind that it passes without us noticing? Is it because the primal part of our brain realizes that our time is running shorter, thus making it seem as if it’s running out at at exponentially faster rate?
Personally, I think perhaps it’s a combination of both of those things. That’s why it’s so very important to really really try to take a moment. Every single day take a moment to stop, look around, and truly appreciate life. For those of us who are American, this week provides the perfect opportunity to start doing that. Yes, there’s often a lot of bitching and moaning and stressing about the big family dinner on Thursday, but that is the perfect opportunity to take a moment. Stop, look around and truly appreciate the fact that at that moment, in all of the chaos, you are alive and with people that you love; regardless of how irritating they may or may not be.
I’m not just talking about special holidays though. Do it every day. Even if you’re simply stuck in traffic or waiting in line at the grocery store. Take a moment and appreciate the fact that you’re fortunate enough to still be on the ride. Open your eyes, open your mind, and open your heart. Take in every single detail of the moment that you’re in and truly appreciate it. Take some time to enjoy the ride.
THE OUTFIT
This is one of my favorite Summer dresses, although somehow it never made it to the blog this past Summer. Here’s a shot of it from Instagram the day I wore it to the Pittsburgh Flea in August though.
When Summer fades to Fall, I typically don’t move most of my Summer pieces to storage in the attic because I wear them during colder weather layered with other things. This is especially true of my sundresses. They are perfect under sweaters or over turtlenecks and long sleeved tops. This particular sweater I’ve had for a gazillion years. I found it on one of my rare visits to TJ Maxx.
I added the belt not only to give the sweater/dress combo some shape, but also because this dress happens to be too long and I’m too lazy to get it hemmed #shortgirlproblems. The easiest ways to fix a too long maxi without hemming are to add a belt or knot the hem. This particular day I went with the belt since there was so much flowiness going on.
THE TIP
Don’t pack away all of your Summer clothes. Many of your Summer favorites make the best layering pieces for Fall/Winter.
- Layer sundresses under sweaters.
- Pair your favorite shorts with tights and over the knee boots.
- Camis and tanks were made to layer underneath your favorite cozy cardigans.
