Is there some sort of a tear in the time space continuum…
THE STORY
…seriously, or is it that time goes by terrifyingly fast the older you get? Was it not just the last day of school, like, I don’t know…a hot minute ago? I’m going with a time space continuum issue because even age can’t make it be Thanksgiving already. And this year is a big Thanksgiving for us. Okay, maybe not big, but different…and special. Normally, actually since forever ago, I cook Thanksgiving dinner. It’s not a big deal in that it’s a big family gathering, we really don’t have much by way of family; it’s a big deal in that I actually cook. Trust me, fashion is my forte, domestic goddess skills, not so much.
Anyway, this year my son and his boyfriend are cooking and hosting dinner at their house. My husband, mini me and I are making a road trip to a dinner that’s the first of my baby boy’s grown up holiday memories in his own home. It’s bittersweet because yes, the goal in raising children is to produce responsible, self-sufficient happy adults, but stillll….he’s my baby boy. And he and the man he loves are cooking us Thanksgiving dinner. And my daughter will probably be borrowing my clothes to wear to dinner. I’m not even playin’…where in the hell did the time go?
THE OUTFIT
Let me preface this by saying, I still believe with my whole heart that tights were used as a torture device at some point in history. It would take a miracle from the heavens to change my opinion on that subject. But with that being said, they are a necessary evil. I would have to say that these fishnet tights that I received from Kushyfoot are actually pretty fine as far as tights go. What makes them different and more wearable, for me at least, is the fact that while they stay up really well, they aren’t compressing your internal organs like a sausage casing. They actually have some give in the waist/tummy region. And (this is crazy important for fishnet tights) they feature a specially designed sole that helps create a messaging sensation for extra comfort. I’ve always liked the look of fishnets, but the net pattern always hurt my feet in shoes; not so with these. The light padding in the sole totally eliminates that problem. These Kushyfoot fishnets are also a nice thick gauge knit, they don’t feel like they are going to shred if the wind blows too hard, which is also unusual in the world of fishnets. I also received a pair of super thick opaque tights that I haven’t had a chance to wear yet (it’s been too warm…umm…what??), but they also have generous give in the waist and the specially designed sole so they will undoubtedly be my go to’s once we’re well and truly lost in the depths of winter.
The other highlight of this rather pared back look. Um, the shoes silly. I have been jonesing for a pair of lace up flats since they first started blowing up the blogosphere and Instagram a while back. Ya, I’m an advertiser’s dream girl. I see something I like, I obsess, I buy. I finally found a pair that didn’t empty the bank account at Old Navy.
“I’VE BEEN JONESING FOR A PAIR OF LACE UP FLATS…”
ON can be pretty hit or miss with shoes, but these are a definite hit. They fit perfectly and are so comfortable. Trust me, I’d have them in other colors if they weren’t sold out in my size. This super soft tunic sweater is also an Old Navy score. I actually had four sweaters in my cart and I had left them there to narrow it down to two a few days later. The sale gods were smiling down on me because when I went back to thin the herd, they were having a six hour flash sale…an additional 30% off the already sale price. I ended up getting all four sweaters for under $50; the most I paid for any one sweater was $12.90. Well played Old Navy, well played.
THE TIP
When the weather gets cold enough to warrant wearing tights, shop around. Find the tights that work for you and your shape; not all tights are created equal. Look for quality knit that will hold up, as well as enough stretch for comfort in the waist/tummy area.
