What are your thoughts on Valentine’s Day…
THE STORY
…is it one of those “big deal” holidays or barely a blip on your festivities radar? Personally, it’s not something I get too worked up about. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hatin’ on all of you Valentine’s Day lovers out there. I’m just saying it’s not one of those days that I get too excited about. Somehow over the years it has become so over-commercialized, much like Halloween. At least it’s actually a holiday of sorts unlike it’s October counterpart, Sweetest Day. Now that’s a Hallmark holiday if I’ve ever seen one.
Do you know how I spent my Valentine’s Day? I woke up to a love note on the bathroom mirror in dry erase marker. I spent all day in my pajamas sweats, curled up in our living room watching a marathon of total cheeseball disaster movies with the love of my life buried in a pile of dogs. Dinner was meatloaf. Yep. Just the way I like it. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
THE OUTFIT
I guess if I have a “uniform” this must be it. The last time I wore this long camo shirt I styled it almost the same way; and I didn’t even realize it until I looked back. Of course this time to change things up I threw in the thumb brace just to add a little tough girl flair. And you can never go wrong mixing camo with leopard. It was warm enough (yes, this was just a week ago and now I’m buried in snow) to go with the leopard pumps instead of the ankle boots.
Truth be told, I put this outfit together around the subtle, but gorgeous layered necklace. I wanted it to be center stage so I kept the rest of my outfit basic. The necklace is from Premier Jewelry’s Spring 2016 catalog. I met Christy, who is a Premier Jewelry rep through a mutual real-life friend. I took her up on the offer to collaborate with her because I already own one of their necklaces and I love it. What sets this necklace apart from your standard pre-layered necklace is it can be entirely reconfigured to be one, two, or three strands. This also gives you the option to style pieces of it with other necklaces. The interesting thing is, much of their jewelry is like this. A few quick tweeks and you have an entirely new piece. It’s kind of like the MacGyver of jewelry; a change here and a change there and you have something you didn’t realize you had. Intrigued? C’mon…you know you are. Stop by Christy’s website, check out the catalogs and drop her an email. It’s as easy as that.
THE TIP
It’s not a bad thing to have a “uniform” so to speak. You know, something that just works for you and that you feel comfortable in. For me, it’s a duster or long shirt layered over a tee and jeans or leggings ( See here, here, here, and here). Do I wear it every day? No. Is it a good default outfit when I’m not really feeling anything else? Yes. Does it simplify your life on those days that you’re running late and need to get dressed with little thought? Yes.
Saying uniform sounds so restrictive, so maybe let’s call it a “go to look”. Think about it for a minute, do you have a “go to look”? I bet you do even if you don’t realize it. What do you reach for more often than anything else when you’re getting dressed? What do you feel most comfortable in? What works for you when it seems like nothing else in your closet is cooperating? The answer to those questions is your “go to look”.
