Did you ever think about how color can affect your frame of mind and how you associate certain colors with particular things…
THE STORY
…I’m an equal opportunity color wearer. I wear rich jewel tones in the Spring and Summer even though they bring to mind the warm coziness of Fall. The same goes for black and gray. Gray is my favorite neutral and I wear it a lot. And I have no problem with sporting an all black ensemble in July.
I talked the other day about defaulting to my gray and camel coats even though I own a bunch of pretty, standout coats. I’m the same with color. I do wear whatever I’m in the mood for regardless of season, but I tend to rely heavily on darker hues in the Winter. Every year it seems, right about the time I am absolutely done with darker days and being stuck inside, I start craving color. Last week I was done. Looking at the outfits I had been wearing (Instagram and a blog are good for that) there was simply too much black. I was over it.
So I put together the most candy colored pastel outfit I could find. And do you know what? I just felt better. Happier. Perkier. Lighter on my feet. It was almost like I could see the light of Spring at the end of the tunnel. Just about everything I’ve worn since then has been on the lighter brighter end of the spectrum; more in the realm of colors one would associate with warmer times of the year. Is color a cure-all for the Winter blues? No. But it just might perk you up enough to make the home stretch of Winter a bit more bearable.
THE OUTFIT
Last week I hit the black and gray wall. While I love both colors, I reached the point that I literally could not wear either one again for even one more day. I craved color…and thus, this outfit was born. I wear all colors all year; you all know how I feel about rules. The problem is, much like my coat wearing habits, I somehow fall into a pattern of wearing predominantly black/gray/camel. They are like my cold weather default palette.
The mixed pastel cropped sweater I borrowed from my mini. It’s fun now that we are the same size, although she borrows more from me. The pink midi skirt has been languishing in my closet for quite awhile now. It’s a pretty great skirt that I picked up from Boohoo in several colors a few years back. They actually still carry it here, although it’s a darker shade of pink. I layered the skirt over a single layer tulle skirt to add some texture and interest. Lately I’ve tried layering my tulle skirts under other pieces like I did with this dress. It just adds an extra element of fun to an outfit.
I don’t worry much about trends, but I do pay attention and pastel shades are still going strong. For the Spring/Summer lavender appears to be the golden child of the pastel family. Lucky me, I also happen to have this skirt in lavender. No doubt it will be making an appearance soon.
THE TIP
Even though Winter is still going strong for those of us in the North, pastel shades are fair game. There is no law to prevent you from wearing shades from the lighter end of the spectrum. There’s nothing better to put a little bounce in your step on yet another cold Winter day than a shot of candy colored fun.
