Mixed Print Dress & Cowboy Boots: Festive And Fall-like

Mixed print dress and cowboy boots.

Random unexpected compliments are always a good thing…

THE STORY

…I’ve talked before about the power and positive vibes of giving genuine compliments to people; people that you know and strangers alike. I try to make a habit of doing it because you are literally injecting a hit of happy into someone’s day just by saying a few kind words.

Just like anyone else, I enjoy a compliment every now and again. In particular I love compliments with a dash of creativity thrown in. For example, many many years ago I was in the midst of a particularly difficult relationship situation. In a very rare (as in a bigfoot sighting rare) display of tears at work, my boss who was trying to calm down the crying woman standing in front of him by making her feel better while also attempting to remain purely professional said, “You’ll be okay…I would have to think that you would be highly marketable.” I literally busted out laughing in the midst of sobbing…and felt one hundred times better. Mission accomplished boss man. And to this day, I remember that compliment verbatim which is why it still holds the #1 spot in the creative compliment hall of fame.

Today though, I got another one at work that’s a pretty serious contender. I passed a coworker in the hall, actually it happened to be same teacher/farmer hybrid who answered our cow related questions a few weeks back and that’s what makes the compliment even better…it came from a total dude type guy who could care less about all things girly. He said, “Hey, I really like your hair…it’s so colorful! It’s so festive and looks like Fall!” After my initial burst of laughter I was able to say, “Thank you…that’s exactly what I was going for!” The guy definitely gets bonus points for descriptive creativity. And seriously, who doesn’t want to be colorful, festive and Fall-like?

THE OUTFIT

This was one of those unplanned last minute outfits. You know the type. You already know exactly what you are going to wear. You get up in the morning get dressed and for one of a variety of reasons it simply doesn’t work out. For me, it was the discovery of a large tear in the seam of a dress that I haven’t even worn yet…grrrr. It was still too hot outside for my fallback default outfit combo of pants+graphic tee+blazer+heels, so after much rushing around and hasty decision making this outfit came to be.

Truth be told, any one of my boho-inspired dresses/tunics like this one is also a tried and true fallback outfit for me too. I literally grabbed the closest of the dresses in my closet along with a lace skirt extender since the dress is actually more of a tunic, threw them both in the dryer to fluff out the wrinkles. I added a pair of ankle boots and boom…I was good to go. PS…Yes, I am that lazy. I always fluff out wrinkles in the dryer. Wrinkles have to be of literally catastrophic proportions before I even consider busting out the iron.

THE TIP

Have a couple of tried and true outfit combinations that you know with 100% work for you. That way on days that you’re running behind or have an outfit emergency you always have something to fall back on that you know you’ll feel good wearing.

I rarely iron anymore either….but I do have a steamer that gets an occasional use. Not often. But once in a great while!! I actually did just throw something in the dryer a couple of weeks ago to fluff it up…so you’re not alone!!
And those are the best compliments—because you know they are truly heart felt!!

Ahhh the power of words! I am trying to be better about complimenting random strangers – so many times I think something and don’t say it because I feel like a creeper. Lately I have been letting it go though and saying it and the responses reinforce the act – so I’m doing it more and more. Everyone benefits from a kind word or two!
You wear this look so well, I love the skirt extender!

Love your story. I totally agree with both your complimenters. Once a little girl, my sons classmate told me, “you look pregnant in your butt”. 😉 I don’t think she thought it was a compliment even then. HaHa! She cringes when I remind her of it now that she’s a grown woman. But to this day I won’t wear a “baby doll” romper with a high waist,

BTW, I just order a couple of those skirt extenders. I was just thinking that I needed to find a couple. You always rock them so sweetly.

Thanks for joining the top of the world style linkup party. Great romantic, but grownup look. These cowboy boots are a big trend this season. These are so you!

I never remember about skirt extenders–I need to go out and look for a short dress, just to remind myself! The “highly marketable” compliment is priceless with the teary-woman context. Definitely one to remember.

This is such a romantic look and your cowboy boots are fantastic. Love your story – compliments are so tricky – I’ve had a few corkers from well wishing men – when I’ve not known whether to laugh or cry! I laughed. xx

Hi, Debbie
Either “great minds think alike” or you’re liking my blog posts, because just like me you just indicated an outfit combination using a “+” between each component! 😀 After I assisted the costume designer on my son’s movie, I bought a Salav steamer and use it all the time in place of ironing. I really don’t like to iron. Before that, I routinely sprayed wrinkled clothes with wrinkle releaser (if they weren’t too bad.) I try to get the dryer fluffing done right away after washing. Heehee. Well, love your outfit, love your article.
Thanks,
Angie

Such a gorgeous outfit Debbie! The lace extender looks great and I love the cowboy boots! I hate ironing too, luckily my mother-in-law does most of it when she comes to stay 🙂 Thanks for linking up!

LOLOLOLOL at the compliments. Sometimes people can be so funny.

Such a great look. I need to do that — create a few fail safe outfits for when I’m having a grumble grumble day.
