Random unexpected compliments are always a good thing…
THE STORY
…I’ve talked before about the power and positive vibes of giving genuine compliments to people; people that you know and strangers alike. I try to make a habit of doing it because you are literally injecting a hit of happy into someone’s day just by saying a few kind words.
Just like anyone else, I enjoy a compliment every now and again. In particular I love compliments with a dash of creativity thrown in. For example, many many years ago I was in the midst of a particularly difficult relationship situation. In a very rare (as in a bigfoot sighting rare) display of tears at work, my boss who was trying to calm down the crying woman standing in front of him by making her feel better while also attempting to remain purely professional said, “You’ll be okay…I would have to think that you would be highly marketable.” I literally busted out laughing in the midst of sobbing…and felt one hundred times better. Mission accomplished boss man. And to this day, I remember that compliment verbatim which is why it still holds the #1 spot in the creative compliment hall of fame.
Today though, I got another one at work that’s a pretty serious contender. I passed a coworker in the hall, actually it happened to be same teacher/farmer hybrid who answered our cow related questions a few weeks back and that’s what makes the compliment even better…it came from a total dude type guy who could care less about all things girly. He said, “Hey, I really like your hair…it’s so colorful! It’s so festive and looks like Fall!” After my initial burst of laughter I was able to say, “Thank you…that’s exactly what I was going for!” The guy definitely gets bonus points for descriptive creativity. And seriously, who doesn’t want to be colorful, festive and Fall-like?
THE OUTFIT
This was one of those unplanned last minute outfits. You know the type. You already know exactly what you are going to wear. You get up in the morning get dressed and for one of a variety of reasons it simply doesn’t work out. For me, it was the discovery of a large tear in the seam of a dress that I haven’t even worn yet…grrrr. It was still too hot outside for my fallback default outfit combo of pants+graphic tee+blazer+heels, so after much rushing around and hasty decision making this outfit came to be.
Truth be told, any one of my boho-inspired dresses/tunics like this one is also a tried and true fallback outfit for me too. I literally grabbed the closest of the dresses in my closet along with a lace skirt extender since the dress is actually more of a tunic, threw them both in the dryer to fluff out the wrinkles. I added a pair of ankle boots and boom…I was good to go. PS…Yes, I am that lazy. I always fluff out wrinkles in the dryer. Wrinkles have to be of literally catastrophic proportions before I even consider busting out the iron.
THE TIP
Have a couple of tried and true outfit combinations that you know with 100% work for you. That way on days that you’re running behind or have an outfit emergency you always have something to fall back on that you know you’ll feel good wearing.
