Of Tourist Tees And Blatant Stupidity: Graphic Tee, Cropped Jeans And Birken-nots

Yes my friends, I have made up another new word. Remember, that’s not to be confused with renaming things that already have names (latte is the new tan…) which annoys me as opposed to amusing me, which made up words do. Since I will not spring for a pair of Birkenstocks, I will make do with my Birken-nots. Birken-nots is so much more fun than faux Birkenstocks don’t you think? That was just so unwieldy and pretentious sounding.
Normally, when I visit places I don’t buy t-shirts. Only if I find a really stupendously cool one will I cave in. In light of my love affair with graphic tees, one might find that odd. But the thing is, typically tourist tees are not only grossly overpriced they’re also usually so cheesy you need to buy some crackers and wine to go along with them. This particular tee is actually kind of cool. I found it in the men’s section so it was a little less expensive. (Don’t even get me started on why the men’s tees seem to cost less…WTH?!) Why did I even look at the tees at the gift shop? That would be where the blatant stupidity comes in.
Even for a day trip I always take way more stuff than we need. You know, just to be safe. So I had rain ponchos, umbrellas, more snacks than three people could possibly need, sunscreen, extra shoes…the list goes on… What didn’t I bring. Um, jackets. Who does that?! To be fair, we were having a stretch of ninety degree days with a billion percent humidity, but still, seriously? No jackets? So we get there and of course it’s breezy and a bit chilly. In light of the fact my daughter and I were both wearing sundresses there really wasn’t an option, so off to the gift shop we went. Nothing screams clueless tourist like running around Niagara Falls in a Niagara Falls tee. But I rocked it like nobodies business baby. I threw it over that dress, knotted the front and was good to go.
As I said, this is actually not a bad tee, I’m kind of diggin’ it. But you all know when I got it home, I cut that damn crew neck right off. Yes, I did. Now it’s less touristy and more me. I decided to wear these cropped jeans with the cute ankle zipper detail because it’s now a bit cooler around here than normal. And of course the Birken-nots because I’m lazy and they just slide right on my foot. No work involved.

Okay, lady, you are totally winning me over to the cut off tee camp. Any tips for a newb like me? Where do I start cutting? Do I just follow the seams? Do I need a good pair of scissors? Do I need to sew the edges to keep from fraying?

Oh, and btw, you totally rock that tourist tee. Must be the ironic vibe you’ve got going on! 😀

I usually use a top with a neckline I like as a guide for where to cut. I sew nothing…ever…I gots no skills! I usually throw it in the wash so it curls up just a bit where I cut it. I’ve never had anything fray on my so no worries. Go for it!

Love the tee. I used to always cut the crew necks out of tees too. Have to keep that in mind the next time a neckline stops me from buying a tee I otherwise love.

I just don’t like how crew necks look on me…and sometimes they just seem a bit too confining.

Your tee definitely doesn’t look “touristy” the way you’ve styled it! Very cute!

Cutting the neck off was a great idea! I wouldn’t have guessed it was the average tourist tee! Plus, yay Niagara! I’m hoping to roadtrip there next summer (we’re only a few hours away!)

I really like the more open neck from cutting the collar. This tee looks great, especially with the leopard belt!

I too own some Birken-nots lol. And I love the name you gave them, Debbie. You always inspire me to wear more jeans, denim cut-offs and graphic tees because those items are always superb on you!

Welcome by to see my latest in Dresses. Haha, I have an obsession LOL.

Happy Monday! Ada. =)

Birken-nots ya that is great name. I can’t wear those things. I walk out of them. Give me a good old, cool pair of summer flat and I am there. Not this friday but next is chemo 6 FINALE!!! So count with me, two weeks to chemo 6 and then two week after chemo 6 and I am posting me on my blog again (doing a photo shoot). Dang cancer anyway.

I guess they will just let anybody wear a cool Canadian t-shirt now. Sheesh. What is this world coming to? ; P Of course I adore the maple leaf…but I may be slightly biased there.

Love the idea of the birken-nots. I could use that idea if I ever manage to buy a faux Birken bag that I want too…since I know I’ll never have the 10k needed to buy a real one.

We are all loving this new word! Nothing wrong with looking like a tourist and wearing those sorts of tee shirts. I have been known to do so from time to time.
