This is it. The big week. The kick off to that magical time of the year…
THE STORY
…I don’t know exactly how it happened (because I’m certain just yesterday was the first day of Summer break), but this week is the official beginning of the holiday season. This time of year has always been my favorite although I’m not sure why. We don’t have much by way of family so other than Thanksgiving dinner at my son’s house along with his boyfriend’s family we don’t really have much happening over the holidays. We have our own little traditions (Rudolph and hot chocolate anyone?), but as far as family parties and whatnot we just don’t have that in our lives. One of my favorite days is actually the day after Thanksgiving. Not because it’s Black Friday (believe it or not, I don’t partake in that bit of insanity), but because that’s the day we put up the tree and all of the prettiness.
I think a lot of my love for the holidays has to do with all of the extra sparkle and prettiness. I have twinkle lights in various parts of my house all year ’round, but there’s just something extra special about a lit up tree sitting front and center in the dining room, not to mention all of the festive extras like the stockings, centerpieces and garland and bows that I attach to everything in sight. This year the mini and I are particularly excited because we spent an obscene amount of money on all new rose gold decorations…yes, rose gold…it’s going to be a girly Christmas around here my friends.
The one thing that doesn’t ever change though is the tree. You see, no matter what color scheme the rest of the indoor ornaments are, the tree remains the same. It’s special. It holds all of the memories. There are the ornaments from each year of my son and daughter’s childhoods; ornaments gifted to me from people I love; and most special of all, delicate glass ornaments (still stored in their original box) from my mom and dad’s tree back in the 60’s. Dad gave them to me several years ago during a good period in our relationship and they mean the world to me. My tree is a mismatched hodgepodge of a thousand things and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
THE OUTFIT
It’s been awhile since I posted a casual look (well, casual for me at least) so today I’m sharing a little denim action with ya. And surprisingly it’s non-distressed denim. That’s only because I wore this to work and obviously shredded jeans at work is no bueno.
I wanted to try a different sort of color combo, so when I decided to wear my mustard yellow super soft sweater I thought, hmmm…what doesn’t typically get paired with mustard yellow. Pink of course! I can’t say that I’ve ever tried this particular combination. Mustard and burgundy, mustard and olive green, mustard and black…been there done that. But pink? Nope…not until this outfit. And not one shade of pink, but two; the screaming pink velvet booties and the super sweet blush moto were the perfect partners in crime.
And guess what? I loved them together. One would think that they might clash, but there’s just something about the two that I’m really digging and I’ll most definitely be doing it again in the future. How about you…is mustard yellow and pink a combo you might try?
THE TIP
Think outside of the box when it comes to color combinations. Pink and mustard are an unlikely pair as were the light blue and red I tried a few months ago. Sometimes it’s the most unlikely of partnerships that turn out to be your favorites.
