Plaid Duster, Striped Turtleneck & Fringed Infinity Scarf: Act Your Age

My gorgeous friend Suzanne at suzannecarillo.com shared an absolutely excellent article on her Facebook page in regard to what exactly age appropriate means. You should really take a moment and read the article here. It’s some truly delicious food for thought. Any of you who have hung around my little corner of the blogosphere long enough know that I’m not a big fan of rules; particularly those of a fashion and beauty nature. I shop at Forever 21 (I mean come on, the name says it all…Forever  21…’nuff said) and predominantly in the junior’s department at all other retail establishments. I would be as nervous as my sheltie without her Xanax if you told me I had to buy something at CJ Banks and actually wear it it public. Going anywhere near the Alfred Dunner section at JC Penney causes me to break out in hives…I kid you not.

Why is this? Is it because I’m trying to be something I’m not? Am I desperately trying to hold on to my youth? Do I actually think I look 21? Hells no. It’s because I’m a woman barreling towards my next birthday with a “0” in it who just so happens to love clothes and shoes that are cool and fabulous as opposed to elastic-waisted polyester and orthopedic. I also happen to love glitter and sequins as much as any twelve year old girl and I have the sense of humor of a twelve year old boy. Does any of this make me any less who I am? Um, no. It is who I am. Love it or leave, it’s all the same to me. I’m happy with myself and at the end of the day that’s the only thing that matters my friends.

I decided this time I’d make this uber cool plaid duster work as a dress. See how I styled it more casually here. And because I never miss an opportunity to mix it up with the prints I wore my striped turtleneck underneath along with my fringed infinity scarf and fleece leggings for both warmth and coverage since the duster is sheer. I also broke another fashion “rule” here because I had the audacity to wear black and navy blue together in one outfit. I know. I’m such a freakin’ rebel.

Totally amazing look! And you should know by now that I totally agree with your philosophy about age and fashion! Style is way to express yourself and why should we be following rules for that? I need to read that article.
Thanks so much for joining in for FUN FASHION FRIDAY! Have a fab weekend, Debbie!

Brilliant! Both the outfit and the sentiment of today’s post. Will scamper off to Suzanne’s blog in a bit but thanks for the “give ’em hell” speech. Perfect for a Friday after two days gone from work.

Beautiful look. I don’t follow convention and admire others who equally ignore it. We should all be artists of our own lives, inventing style and substance at any age.

Great outfit and you wear it well. I never knew there was rule about navy and black.

I love how you’ve expressed the same sentiment in your own words.

I also like the mixture of patterns and textures here. That scarf looks cozy.

Great post Debbie!

SOOOO true Deb, will have to pop over to suzanne’s article. Yes, the term age appropriate kind of bothers me too.. like one is pigeonholed into wearing chrocted cardigans with roses, and ewww. elastic waist pants once one turns 70! I already know I will have long red hair until I am under ground! just sayin I suppose I commited a fashion faux paux wearing navy and black wed, and that I like funky tights. I think creativity and an outward expression of your personaility is what makes fashion fun . On that note, I love this plaid jacket on… Read more »

Hello Debbie! I have three words for you: YOU GO GIRL!!!!!! Loved it, loved it, loved it!!!! Both your outfit and everything you wrote. It is midnight here in Orlando and you got me laughing out loud in my bed while reading your post. Everything you said was right on point and like you, I also shop at F21 a LOT!!!! It is actually funny because when my college daughter tells her friends that she shops in my closet and wears my clothes, they look at her with a weird face like…. how is that possible??? I sometimes try to… Read more »

Wearing your duster – your red, plaid duster! – as a dress is so freaking cool, dearest Debbie!! And layering the striped turtleneck underneath takes things into the awesome outfit stratosphere!! XOXO
