Since starting my new position in January, I gotta say that there are days that I can’t believe they pay me to go there. I love it that much. Special education is different from regular education in that you develop a whole different relationship with the kids because typically you’re dealing with the same kids for several years. As I’ve mentioned before, since I got moved back to the middle school from the elementary, I’ve had most of this particular group of kids for three or four years. And now I have them all day because they have me for all four major subjects and a study hall. All. day. That’s one of the best things about the job. And the worst. Why the worst? Well, at a certain point I become like a mom to them. But at school. Hence, school mom. And with that role comes a lot of responsibility. Not that regular ed teachers don’t have a lot of responsibility, believe me, they do; it’s just of a different variety.
There’s quite a bit more emotional investment when you spend that much time with a group of kids. I feel like I need to protect them and help them to become better people along with teaching them to read and count money like a boss. And sometimes, like today, it’s just exhausting. We’re going through a rough patch; between the middle school hormones, bad influences, and bickering like siblings (and I do actually have two siblings in my class) they kicked my butt today. I spent the last two class periods (with assistance from my sweet friend who happens to be the principal) conducting a group therapy/reprimand/what the hell are you guys thinking session. They are, for the most part, an excellent group of kids so things will right themselves. If even one or two of them left today with a better understanding of how important it is to be kind to one another then having the life sucked out of me was worth it.
Now let’s get serious here. How bad can your day really be when you have on a pair of sequin joggers? It can’t be bad…especially when those sequin joggers are paired with the best leopard sandals ever. Between the laces, the straps, the just right wedge heel and the zipper up the back, these babies are pretty close to perfect. Tone it all down with a sweatshirt and you’ve got the perfect hormonally challenged teenager group therapy outfit.
