Trends come and trends go; it’s as predictable as the changing of the seasons. One minute something is “in”, the next it’s “out”…
THE STORY
…Humans are fickle creatures. One second we love something then in the blink of an eye, we move on to something else. Sometimes a trend gains traction and has staying power. It becomes a permanent fixture; for example denim, velvet, and a good moto jacket.
Sometimes though, a trend just quietly fades away. It wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, like say, a crunchy 80’s perm, but for whatever reason we just forgot about it. One such item, which I was once madly in love with and have decided I am now on a mission to single-handedly bring back is the banana clip. Yes friends, the banana clip.
How did I ever forget about the amazing awesomeness that is the banana clip? It gives you a big fluffy (as one of my friends phrased it) my little pony ponytail. The banana clip popped back into my consciousness when all over Twitter and Instagram shots appeared of the “banana clip” from the Alexander Wang show at fashion week.
Why the quotes? Because alas, those models were not sporting a banana clip. Apparently the children writing the articles referring to it as such had not done their homework. No, the models were wearing claw clips. Like chapsticks, I currently have about 100 of them in various places throughout my house, my purse, my desk at work. It’s the world’s easiest way to pull your hair up off of your neck. But trust me, it’s not a banana clip, as this article also points out.
Misnomers aside, the banana clip was now back in my brain hard. It occurred to me that I perhaps still had one buried in the deep dark recesses of my “maybe I’ll use this someday” hair and beauty basket in the bathroom. I dug around and indeed I did. I promptly rocked it the very next day.
Since I was newly obsessed I started investigating. Imagine my excitement when I discovered that not only were my favorite Goody banana clips available on Amazon, they were also still actually in-store at pretty much everywhere…i.e. Walmart, Walgreens, my local grocery store…So my long haired sisters, who’s on board for a resurgence of the banana clip?
THE OUTFIT
I’ve been waiting to wear this sheer embroidered top since my husband got for me as a Christmas gift. It’s just been too, well, Winter outside. So when Mother Nature decided to throw in one of those random really warm “let’s pretend it’s Spring” days it was the first thing I grabbed.
It’s kind of tulle-like, but it’s soft and comfortable. It comes in black too which is also pretty, but I really love the warmer weather vibe this mint green gives off. I decided to pair it with black pants and my favorite black moto jacket to rough up the softness a little bit.
The finishing touch was the showstopping pink velvet ankle boots. The exact pair that I’m wearing is currently only available in a size 7, but I’ve linked other options below. I’ve been wearing the crap out of them since they arrived…I mean seriously, look at them. The first time I wore them was with my pink plaid vintage coat; it’s like they were made for each other. You’d think the bright color might make them hard to style, but in my opinion it’s the very thing that makes them so versatile. They add an immediate upgrade to pretty much anything you pair them with.
THE TIP
Dressing for “confused” weather requires some forethought and creativity. Lighter layers are key; you can add and remove a layer as necessary. For example, I also had a cardigan that I took off and put on throughout the day with this outfit. Your feet still need to be covered for the sake of warmth, but heavy socks aren’t necessary. An ankle boot paired with a low sock will do the trick.
