Turquoise Floral Print Tunic & Over The Knee Boots: Take A Deep Breath

Turquoise floral tunic, long vest and over the knee boots. Styling a warm weather dress for cooler weather.

I have a bad habit of putting inordinate amounts of pressure on myself to get things done. Things that aren’t necessarily any type of emergency, but that I feel like I just have to get done…

THE STORY

…Oftentimes my own personal to-do list is highly unrealistic based on the time that I have to work with, and I have to talk myself down by reminding myself that the sun will still rise tomorrow if I don’t get all of the laundry put away. I’ve currently gotten myself backed into one of those corners, but this time the pressure to get things done is justified.

Awhile back (2 1/2 years ago to be sorta exact) I had a consult with a foot surgeon in regard to a bunion that was not only wildly ugly, but also was starting to become painful. It had taken me forever to go in the first place because when I thought of bunions I thought of my Grandma’s feet which were…shall we say, unsightly, and so it made me feel old. Once I did some research and found out that they had more to do with genetics (thank you Grandma) than age I got over myself and wasn’t quite so freaked out.

For a number of reasons, I didn’t have it done even though the surgeon assured me that it would only get progressively worse. First of all, I wasn’t a fan of the surgeon; he was of the arrogant variety so I wasn’t impressed. Secondly, I had heard that the recovery can be excruciatingly painful so there was that. Finally, and the biggest reason for the delay was plain and simple, the inconvenience. I would be in a boot for 6 weeks and I would have to stay off of it as much as possible so that the bones could heal. So for all intents and purposes, I’d be incapacitated. It’s my right foot, so driving would be an issue as would going to work, getting groceries, showering (at least until the stitches healed), mowing the yard…the list goes on and on. Yes, of course my husband would help out, but who wants to be unable to do the everyday stuff of life?

In any case, I have gotten to the point that the pain is constant and sometimes unbearable; it even wakes me up in the middle of the night and I’m obviously not even standing on it. Hence another surgical consult with a different surgeon. I’m happy to say this surgeon is much more personable; I can talk to her and ask questions and not feel like she’s talking down to me or that I’m bothering her. I’m not so happy to say, that because I delayed (ya, ya…I know) it is much worse and will require more extensive work to repair it. The surgery is scheduled for May 16th which led to my mini melt down this morning over the to-do list. There truly are things that I have to get done before the surgery.

It just so happens that May is one of those times of the year when much needs done, primarily because of the shift into Summer. The Winter clothes need to go to the attic and the Summer clothes need to come down; that I obviously have to do myself. I need to get all of my outside flowers planted; yes, someone else could do it, but that’s something that I really enjoy doing especially now that my daughter helps me pick out and plant the flowers. Our outdoor/patio living area needs to be set up; my husband does most of it, but there are things that take two of us to do. These are all things I normally start working on this time of the year, but usually I have as much time as I feel like taking; this year I have a deadline.

Now I just need to take a deep breath, step back, make a list and get myself organized so that I can get it all completed…

THE OUTFIT

Is this dress not a breath of sweet Spring air or what? As soon as I saw it while visiting Boutique 16063 last month I knew that it was coming home with me. It has that boho vibe that is so me and the bright floral print and gorgeous turquoise color just sucked me right in. It’s lightweight so it will work all Summer long while also being a perfect layering piece for cooler weather.

I added the long vest not only for a little additional warmth, but also because it made the dress more interesting. I’ve always been a fan of the third piece rule and the vest worked well as my third piece. Technically, your footwear doesn’t count as a piece, but in this case I counted the boots. Originally I was going to go with my taupe otk boots, but I chose black instead because there is a hint of black in the print of the dress and also I thought the black was a little surprising paired with the more Spring-like vibe of the dress.

THE TIP

When putting together an outfit try adding a third piece (belt, vest, blazer/jacket, statement necklace). It takes an average outfit and makes it a standout.

Wow…that’s such a bummer about your bunion, Debbie, but at least you found a surgeon that has good bedside manner!
I have bunions too—luckily mine don’t hurt at all, and I forget about them. Until someone says—OOOHHH!! 🙂
I have to admit, I haven’t worn my boots in the last month—I’m way too excited for spring and sandals….silly, me!
As for those things that need to get done—they will…or they won’t, right? (but so much easier for me to say, that when they aren’t “my” things to do!)

Debbie,
I LOVE reading your posts! I had to laugh as I, too, have been putting off having some surgery on my foot. Same issues: 3 weeks in a case, another three in a boot–and I just have TOO MUCH to do! It’s also my right foot, so the driving issue especially makes me want to put this off. And what to do with the BLOG?!! How to style a boot? Haha! Anyway, best of luck. I’ll have to follow suit very soon.

Is a arrogant surgeon an excuse?? Hahaha, I am just kidding. I have the same about getting stuff done! I now want everything inside the house being done before the nice warm weather arrives! I have to get things done! It is so stupid. But anyway, you look gorgeous in that color!

Debbie,
Been there, done that. I put it off too for many years and all I can say is that I wish I’d done them sooner. I had the surgery on both feet ( separately, a year apart) and the pain afterward was not anywhere near as bad as imagined. Time off my feet during recovery was a little challenging but quite relaxing and a great excuse to just chill. I never looked so well rested in my life. Good luck.

I’m so glad you’re getting your bunion sorted as they can so affect your mobility and I’m pleased you’ve found a different surgeon too.
I’m so crushing on your boots, Debbie and they look fab with the dress.

Oh, Debbie, the joys of aging. I have severe varicose veins and I know I should have them dealt with, but I keep putting it off too. They don’t really bother me that much, but with your story, I am now wondering, that maybe I should have something done before I end up with worse problems. Glad you are going to get them dealt with. Your dress is lovely and I really like the addition of the vest too. Great look. – Amy

Debbie I hear you…my boot came off yesterday after 4 weeks. Now starting the rehabilitation back to wearing two shoes again (so excited). My fracture was obviously an accident, so no time to prepare. Instead I left for lunch (on the day it happened), came home with a fracture. I was so angry and frustrated for the first ten days, all I could think about was how much I could be doing. On day eleven, I realised how lucky I am and that everything could wait. Please don’t run yourself into the ground before your surgery, our bodies need to… Read more »

I am in the same boat! I have a bunion that’s causing pain and I need to have surgery. Completely freaking out because I will be unable to exercise for at least 6 weeks, wearing an ugly boot, etc., etc. I haven’t scheduled my surgery yet but I go back to the doctor in a few weeks to discuss. Ugh! I am looking forward to hopefully being out of pain and being able to wear any shoe I want again. I’ll be thinking of you!

I can totally sympathise about the horrible bunion. I also suffer with them. Fortunately I haven’t had too much pain with mine lately though. Just think about how much better you will feel once it’s all done and dusted and you’ve recovered from the surgery – you’ll have wished you’d have done it sooner! All the best for a quick and speedy recovery.
I absolutely adore that dress and I love that you teamed black boots and a black choker with it. You really do look amazing!

Am a big fan of vintage-y floral prints. That dress is lovely and looks great with the over the knee boots. Like your “Rule of three”. Makes perfect sense.

I broke my foot several months ago and was in an ugly boot thingie for around 8 weeks. I’m a very active person and found it to be extremely frustrating. So I started doing stretch yoga classes I found online. It really helped with my mental state. Relaxed me and kept all my muscles from totally freezing up from inactivity.

Best of luck with your surgery 🙂

Oh feet, aren’ they a problem! I have had horrid foot pain last year from referred muscle pain, and I also inherited dad’s hammertoes. Great thing huh. Sorry about the bunion, I know foot pain can be painful! Just do the best you can. That is what I try and think when I cant do everything I want. and lists.
I love your dress, the print and color look vintage and so pretty! Great pairing with the OTK boots!
Thanks for linking
