Velvet Kimono & Black Skinny Jeans: Why Did The Chicken Cross The Road?

Velvet kimono, black skinny jeans and Birkenstock boots.

For the most part, I’m pretty easily amused. Sometimes the simplest thing will strike me as insanely amusing…

THE STORY

…Such was the case on Saturday. The mini and I were out on a Shop Small adventure hitting up boutiques and small shops in our area. Before I get on to the part of the story I find irrationally amusing, how freakin’ cool is this alley we discovered?

And of course we took an alley selfie…

You all realize of course, that at some point I’ll be doing outfit shots in this alley so that I can totally pretend I’m a city girl, right? Okay, back on track now. We were driving on a rather lesser traveled road, when I caught movement out of the corner of my eye. I hit the brakes and came to a stop because…wait for it…a chicken crossed the road in front of us! BAHAHA! It still makes me giggle. I was laughing so hard I almost peed my pants

Of course while I’m dying of amusement, I’m getting the thirteen year old side-eye. She says, “What are you laughing at??” I’m like, “Seriously?? It was a chicken. Crossing the road. C’mon…” Her response, “Annddd??” “You seriously don’t find this the least bit amusing? You know, as in why did the chicken cross the road? At the very least, actually seeing a chicken run is pretty damn funny…” The final response from my mini? “Um, she crossed the road because the rest of the chickens were on the other side.” Well then. Case closed. I guess we have our answer to the eternal question. From a thirteen year old no less.

On a final note, as I was writing this, said thirteen year old strolled through the room and asked what today’s post was about. I said, “The chicken of course.” Cue the eye roll and sashay out of the room.

THE OUTFIT

My all-time favorite neutral is without a doubt, gray. And my current obsession most definitely has to be velvet. So, was there really any question when I saw this gray velvet kimono at Forever 21? Um, no. No, there was not. In store it was styled over a gorgeous lavender velvet slip dress that may have caused me to drool just a little, but alas, it had super flimsy (and non-adjustable) straps so it had to stay behind.

This outfit is yet another example of how a kimono to fancy up just about anything. They work with dresses, denim shorts, as dresses…the options are pretty much endless when it comes to a kimono. The velvet kimono was the perfect third piece to dress up a basic jeans/sweatshirt outfit. Never heard of the third piece rule? Read more about it here.

THE TIP

To add a little interest to a basic outfit, follow the third piece rule and you can’t go wrong. In other words, put your basic look together…top+bottom+shoes=basic look, then add a third piece. The third piece could be a kimono, blazer/jacket, belt, statement jewelry, scarf or vest; really anything that adds an additional layer of interest.

Love the story! And that kimono is absolutely beautiful! I am all about the crushed velvet lately. This piece is gorgeous.
BTW, I had Phil at Pipdig install a new theme for me and I am loving it!Thank you so much for referring me to him – I told him you referred me – such a painless process and so affordable, I couldn’t be any happier!

The third piece rule is my favorite fashion rule! In fact, there was a time I thought I’d made that up! I’m so brilliant, ha, NOT. Then I started seeing reference to it around the internet and I was like, oh.

Since your mini is so knowledgeable about chickens you should ask her which came first – the chicken or the egg. Let’s see her answer THAT one!

I’ve sorta been off kimonos lately…but a VELVET one…hmmm….

Gorgeous! I especially love the gray kimono combined with the silver jewelry. My motto these days (stolen from my niece) is “Make it fancy.” This outfit is fancy in the best possible way – it doesn’t try too hard, it seems so comfortable and effortless but is very special.

Love this! If you don’t mind me asking, since we’re both 5’2″, what size is the kimono? The length looks pretty good on you. That would help me in ordering. Thanks!

So, it turns out we have a Forever 21 store locally and I could try them on for size. But now that I’m home and styling it, all I’m getting is a bathrobe vibe! :-(. I’m going to keep playing around in hopes I can hit on the uber-cool vibe you’ve got going on. Fingers crossed!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this look, Debbie! That velvet kimono is gorgeous… I do adore velvet as well so I can see why you had to have it. I would have been peeing my pants seeing the chicken crossing the road too. Youth today, eh? They just don’t get it! LOL

I love this entire look, and that kimono looks super soft and comfy! That’s. so funny about the chicken. I ate at a restaurant today that I’ve eaten at before. They always have chickens running around outside. Last time we were there, one was walking around inside. We WERE in Alabama! LOL
