White Tunic & Floral Lace Up Flats: Our Own Little Piece Of The Fashion World

White tunic, floral lace up flats and leggings. Building an outfit around a single piece.

Isn’t it a rather broad statement, hyperbole even, to state that any one thing or group of people is heralding the “death of style”? I mean, c’mon; as long as there are living breathing humans who adorn themselves in clothing each day, isn’t style alive and well?…

THE STORY

…A few weeks ago my friend Erin from erinhaight.com texted me the links to a few articles that popped up after Milan Fashion Week. It seems that the fashion editors at Vogue took exception to the proliferation of digital influencers i.e. fashion bloggers, at the fashion shows. The editors described them as “embarrassing”, “sad”, and “pathetic”. Their reasoning being that the girls parade up and down the sidewalks at the shows wearing gifted clothing while hoping for the perfect “street style” shot to be snapped. Is there not a smidge of hypocrisy here in light of the fact some of those same editors often appear in any number of street style feeds? This feels more to me like the discomfort and jealousy said editors are feeling at having no choice but to allow a new breed of fashion influencers into the “inner circles” of the fashion world.

Personally, I don’t find any of us who consider ourselves fashion bloggers or digital influencers if you’re one of the cool kids, to be embarrassing, sad or pathetic. While I do think that a lot of the bigger name bloggers have gone pretty commercial I don’t have a problem with it, nor do I judge them for it. For them, this is a business; blogging is their career and many have launched lucrative personal lines and side businesses from their blogs. More power to them, there’s not a damn thing wrong with that. I still like to visit the bigger blogs from time to time if for nothing else the eye candy, although it’s more like looking at a glossy magazine online; a little less personal, a little more upscale. My preferences run more to my tribe of blog friends. I enjoy seeing “real life” outfits more than a beautiful editorial spread. I enjoy the keepin’ it real aspect of our smaller corner of the fashion blog world.

But are any of us pathetic or desperate? Absolutely not. Not from the upper echelon of bloggers down to the new girl on the block who only recently started sharing her love of fashion with the world. We are bold and brave and proud of our love of fashion. Not all of us (most of us really) have the means or the opportunity to work in the world of fashion. Does that mean we can’t grab our own little piece of it via the Internet? No it doesn’t. We are all lovers of fashion and personal style, and at the end of the day we are all human beings. In fashion, just as in all other aspects of life, we need to be more supportive of one another. We need to build each other up, not tear one another down. And honestly, before we throw out descriptors like “sad” and “pathetic” perhaps we first need to take a long hard look in the mirror.

THE OUTFIT

This is the fabulous white tunic I reviewed for Foxcroft a month or so ago. It works in so many ways; casual date night, full on professional, and casual but work appropriate like I styled it with today’s outfit. Styling it with just the black leggings would have been fine, although basic. What better way to take a basic look and kick it up a few notches then a pair of truly standout shoes and a killer bag?

These floral lace up flats…ah, my friends, are they beauties or what? Funny thing is, I’ve worn them a bunch of times, but they’ve never made it to the blog until today. How that is I do not know, but the problem has now been officially remedied. The leopard clutch is an easy way to throw in a little bit of print mixing and the denim vest? It served a dual purpose; it gave some shape to the tunic, but it also gave me just enough additional warmth for the slightly chillier temperatures.

THE TIP

Add  a few pieces to your wardrobe that work seamlessly in all areas of your life whether it be work, a night out or just another day in the life. It gives you versatility, saves you money and at the same time frees up some closet space.White tunic styled two ways.

I cannot believe big name influencers would call bloggers sad and pathetic especially since more and more each year, brands and designers rely a lot on fashion bloggers to help boost their businesses. Like you I prefer real bloggers though and rarely visit the famous ones, if ever.

That tunic is so versatile as you have proven too. Today’s outfit you created with it is my favorite. Your clutch and flats are stunning!

Loved your remarks about supporting our fellow bloggers, and not judging the “big”, financially successful ones. We all have a talent and even the smallest blog is a method of self-expression. Loving your white tunic shirt, so crisp. xox

I actually think this is my fave look with that tunic—of course part of it could be the fact that those shoes are appearing again!! I’ve seen them on FB, so I didn’t even realize they hadn’t made it to the blog yet!! And I read that article. I was even telling my husband about it. I kinda think it’s a reaction where they aren’t willing to change the way things are done. Bloggers are here and embracing fashion….and it’s for real women. I think that stores and magazines will prosper if they embrace this new way of marketing and… Read more »

Sigh. I thought we’d moved past all this “bloggers are the enemy” stuff years ago. I think the upcoming elections are making everyone cranky! 120 (?) years ago carriage-drivers were complaining about noisy and frightening automobiles. 70(ish) years ago radio people were complaining about the new abhorrent medium – TELEVISION!!! Now “journalists” are complaining about bloggers (aren’t they ALSO journalists?). There are ALWAYS going to be new mediums/inventions, and the “status quo” folk are ALWAYS going to feel threatened…but YA GOTTA KEEP UP WITH THE TIMES, CATS AND KITTENS!!! There are wonderful journalists and there are crappy ones. There are… Read more »

Yes it was rather rich some of those comments coming from the editors – a little sour grapes me thinks!

And bravo you for sticking with the smaller bloggers! Yes, I too, like seeing outfits on ‘real’ women. I mean some of the bigger bloggers are like glossy magazines and whilst it may please the eye momentarily, some of what they wear is so out of reach that it becomes beyond aspirational.

Love the accessories with that tunic shirt, which has just bags of style.

Hurrah, and elequontly put Debbi! There’s enough room on the sidewalk for everyone surely? Iv’e done my own little bit of chat about advertising so am going to gloss over that bit, but on the whole you’ve nailed this. End of. I’m smiling that we’re both wearing fabulous flowery footwear currently on our blogs. I’d bet we’d both love to have your shoes and my boots in a internet closet for us both to access – sounds great eh? I think Harry Potter had a wardrobe that delivered that idea, didn’t he? Anyway, much as your outfit is adorable, I’m… Read more »

Fashion editors are not exactly interested in the real world, and therefore I don’t really see how they, or whatever they have to say, would be relevant or have any influence whatsoever in my life. On the other hand, I think some of these big-name bloggers are letting their readers down by imitating fashion magazines. The whole point of blogs is to provide an alternative that is more democratic and inclusive and celebrates true style. Yes, style as in personal point of view, something lived in and genuine, not dictated by fashion editors. Vogue is not interested in women who… Read more »

Shame on them for down talking fashion bloggers, sounds like jealousy to me too. I love fashion and lifestyle blogging and it sure has opened doors to meeting so many lovely ladies to stepping out of my comfort zone to trying new things. I am glad to have met you included and love that you included this piece and your take on blogging. Looking fantastic Debbie!

I read that article with much angst and disgust, as I read responses from both Susie Bubble and Bryan Boy with great respect and agreement. I think the definitive statement came from Bryan when he posted a picture on Instagram, wearing Gucci and LV, saying something along the lines of, “At least I pay for my own clothes”. This was in reference to subsequent comments from the editorial clique claiming that bloggers were often just in it for gifts and free clothes. Having worked in the luxury fashion industry for almost 15 years, I can confirm that magazine editors are… Read more »

So spot on Debbie. I just wrote a couple posts ago about how the fashion industry tries to uphold that “fantasy” or “elite” or “everyone must aspire to be us” illusion rather than real life, going to work, being fat and middle-aged clothes reality. It’s such an out of date notion in this day of democracy by internet. It reminds me of art curators who tell you what is good art or wine sommeliers telling you what wine you should like. Long gone are those days when we surrender to an “expert” to tell us what to wear, drink and… Read more »

I gave up looking at or subscribing to Vogue years ago. Their magazine is 99% ads and like you, I’d much rather see realistic styles that I can achieve. Running errands in stiletto’s just doesn’t work with this SoCal gal’s casual lifestyle 😉

Debbie, I love your style and attitude! I also consider you bold and fearless from some of the sexy ways that you dress. I admire the way you can use slip dresses and extenders of all sorts, and am trying to learn that from you. I was thinking today that it is an advanced form of layering. I am like you, in that I love bohemian style and I like to pay the least for my finds. When you one has great style, one looks rich, no matter what they are wearing. Again, much love!

I agree Debbie. I like to look at the models to see what things are in fashion but I prefer to see real people in real clothes.

I love your shoes, they are beautiful!! Thanks for sharing at Creative Mondays last week, your one of my featured blogs this week 🙂
