I don’t know about you, but the older I’ve gotten the faster it seems that time passes…
THE STORY
…I thought that it was just my mind playing tricks on me. You know the drill. I’m getting older which means I’m getting closer to the the grand finale. And that finale scares the sh*t out of me therefore time appears to be barreling right towards it. Or perhaps, I’ve thought, it’s because I’m a teacher. All of you out there who work in public education know that we live and die by that school calendar. I thought maybe that since I was always keeping an eye on that next break, the present was speeding on by. The thing is, time is time. A minute is always 60 seconds. A week is always 7 days. And a year is always comprised of 365 days that move at the exact same pace they always have. So what gives?
As it turns out, the answer lies in science; more specifically in physics. I read a really interesting article the other day about a recent study done that explains the physics behind our changing sense of time. Don’t fall asleep just because you saw the word “physics”. Trust me, while I love teaching Science to my kids (we study fun things like the solar system and ocean creatures), I am not in any way shape or form a science-y kind of girl and yet I found the article super interesting.
Apparently chronological time and “mind time” are two entirely different things. Chronological time of course always stays exactly the same whereas mind time varies dependent upon things like activities we are involved in, how much rest we’ve gotten and…age. Time as humans perceive it is related to mental stimuli, to what we see. As we get older, the rate at which our brains perceive all of this visual/mental stimuli decreases due to a bunch of different factors. This slow down in image processing rate leads to a sense of time going faster. Weird right?
If you want to read the whole article, here is the link. Honestly, it’s really interesting, and I don’t know about you, but I love learning new things. Especially when it involves scientific proof that I’m not imagining things…

THE OUTFIT
When I first wore this skirt back in the Summer, I knew that it would be perfect for cold weather too. All that was necessary was to add tights, boots and a sweater in place of the tank top, bare legs and open booties…and boom…Winter outfit. I actually put very little of my Summer wardrobe in the attic for storage during the Winter. So many pieces, like this skirt, can be easily winterized with a simple swap of other key pieces.
Between my daughter and I, we own this super soft and cozy mustard sweater from American Eagle in 5 different colors…yes, it’s that good. When I love something I typically buy it in multiples whenever possible and this sweater is a definite keeper. It’s soft, warm, perfectly slouchy and works with everything from jeans to skirts to joggers. Versatility in your wardrobe is key and this sweater has it all. It’s currently on sale for less than $18 so now’s the time to snap one or two up for yourself. The days may be getting longer, but there’s still a whole lotta Winter left…
THE TIP
Resist the temptation to sentence all of your Spring/Summer pieces to seasonal banishment once the temperatures cool. Many of them (even some of your shorts!) can easily make the transition to Winter. Layer skirts, shorts and dresses over tights or leggings; top them with cozy cardigans, pullover sweaters or sweatshirts and you’ll stay snuggly warm while getting more wear out of pieces already in your closet.
