The past week just may well have been one of the longest weeks of my life…
THE STORY
…And you know that whenever someone says that, it’s not in a good way. Why is that exactly? Why can’t a fun fabulous week be one of the longest weeks ever? The reason for the length of the week isn’t something I’m ready to get into right now so we’ll save that for another day. Suffice it to say, I’m just simply happy that today is Tuesday.
I have been doing a lot of thinking though, about the human psyche and how difficult events from our past never really go away. Yes, we can overcome them. Yes, the rawness of them fades with time. And yes, they often are a major piece of what forms us into who we are today, but sometimes they can barrel back into our lives like an emotional steamroller triggered by something in our present. It sideswipes us and runs us down, and it all becomes almost as real as it was when it actually happened; kind of like a time machine from hell. You’re still chronologically an adult, but emotionally it’s like you’re 17 all over again.
The thing about the human spirit is though, is that hopefully as we grow older and mature, it does as well. And as such, we are better able to deal with the emotional steamroller the second time around. Another bonus of aging is by the time we are fully formed adults hopefully we have weeded out the losers and surrounded ourselves with only the people that truly matter to us. And those people provide us with a safety net that we may not have had the first go ’round. The combination of maturity and people we love makes it so much easier to bounce back and find our footing again.
THE OUTFIT
Well, today is this month’s installment of the #AgelessStyleLinkup…hopefully you’ll scroll down and link up your latest style post! The theme this month is “Dog Days Of Summer”. And I couldn’t think of a better way to beat the heat than my lightweight black lace sundress. Yes, it’s black. But it’s also super lightweight and loose fitting so that makes it the perfect choice for a sweltering summer day. Back in November I styled the same black lace sundress with a sweater, moto jacket and cowboy boots, but since it was close to 95 degrees, I figured sandals were the better option. I went with brown instead of black or white because not only is it a color combo I really like, but it also isn’t the first one that jumps to mind. Black or white would have worked as well (and you know that I have these same sandals in black and white), but it isn’t often that I do the expected.
This dress looks great belted as well, like I did with the burgundy version which obviously gives it more shape, but it also shortens it up enough that a skirt extender is necessary. Due to the heat, not only was I not feeling the need for an extra layer, I also wasn’t feeling the need to have a belt cinched around my waist. The cage bralette I layered underneath served two purposes; it added cool visual details with a little “bad girl” vibe and a bralette is waaayyy cooler than a regular bra.
THE TIP
When the temperatures reach the point that your makeup has slid off of your face and puddled at your feet, keep it simple. Go for lightweight, loose fitting items and forgo the extras. The lace details on the sundress paired with the cage bralette as well as the brown sandals and choker added enough excitement to keep it interesting without increasing the heat factor.
