Blue Velvet Duster & Distressed Skinny Jeans: The Essence Of Who We Are

Blue velvet duster, distressed skinny jeans and ankle boots. How to style a casual holiday look.

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to spend a little time with someone that you knew fairly well at a particular time in your life, but with whom you’ve not spoken with in years?…

THE STORY

…Why do I ask? Well, think about this for a minute; are you the same person you were thirty years ago? Twenty years? Five years? Hell, are you the same person that you were last week? I think that the essence of who we are, for the most part, stays the same; it’s the foundation upon which we are built. But what we do with that essence, how we conduct ourselves in the world, that changes over time.

There are people that are with us basically throughout our entire lives. Whether they be family or close friends, they are the people who have known us throughout our evolution to get to who we are presently; they are actually part of our evolution. Then there are those who came to know us later in life, after we had already become a fully formed human. They can appreciate our past through what we share with them; and if they are truly special, they appreciate who we are because of our past.

Then there are the people who knew you at a particular point in time. They knew who you were and what you were about then, but who you are now is an enigma, an absolute unknown. To these people you are frozen in time. All that they know of you is what they knew of you. That’s where things can get sticky. In their mind you are still the same sixteen year old, twenty-five year old, thirty year old…you get the idea.

But in your mind, you’re this entirely different kind, funny, cool human being that people actually seem to enjoy being around. You have felt things, seen things, learned things, experienced things that they have utterly no awareness of. Is it possible to reconcile these two completely different perceptions? Is it even necessary to do so? Does it really matter in the big picture if some who knew you when, still perceive you as the goody two shoes, the snobby cheerleader or the outsider who never quite fit in?

THE OUTFIT

This month’s Ageless Style Link Up theme is “Holiday Style”. That of course is open to a limitless number of interpretations. I love seeing all of the gorgeous outfits at this time of year; tulle, velvet, sequins and all manner of delicious sparkliness. In all honesty, my holiday style is pretty low key. We don’t typically attend a lot of parties, and if we do, the dress code is what I’d call “backwoods casual”.

With that in mind, my “Holiday Style” is a more dressed down version of the holidays. I wore this to a Christmas lunch get-together and it was perfect for the occasion. The cami, distressed skinny jeans and ankle boots kept it casual while the scrumptious blue velvet duster, which I first spotted on my beautiful friend Sheela Goh added just a touch of fancy.

If you have a dressier event on your calendar, this duster would be just as perfect over a slip dress or perhaps a sequin pencil skirt and cami. What I’m wearing could even be dressed up with a simple switch of shoes and accessories; trade the boots for a pair of sexy stilettos and the chokers for some heavier duty bling and you’re good to go.

THE TIP

Holiday style doesn’t necessarily have to mean fancy. While I’m a huge fan of all things sparkly and shiny, some events call for a lower key look. If that’s the case, keep your base casual (jeans, a cami or tee, and boots or pumps) then add in one standout piece. Try a sequin jacket or maybe a sequin top or go with velvet like I did here.

You’re so right Debbie—it seems like as I’ve gotten older, the parties have gotten more casual (or is it society). But either way, it’s fun to add in a little glam with one piece like this!!
I so need to get on the band wagon and obtain some velvet for myself!!

I like how your mind works. You ponder many of the same questions I do and this post mirrors my thoughts well. Nice duster!

As soon as I saw your photo on IG, I immediately thought of Sheela’s duster, so it was fun to find out it was the same piece. I love how you kept your look casual and topped it off with this beautiful statement piece. Such fabulous holiday style, Debbie!

LOVE that duster!

I have said goodbye to people that have tried to reconnect with me because they still think I’m the same as I was when I knew them. I just find I have nothing in common with them anymore. It was a moment in time that has passed and I don’t need to keep trying to relive it.

I love this blue duster on you and would like one for my closet. The older I get the more I think of how my outlook on life has changed. I am still the cool human I was in my 30’s but my likes and dislikes have changed dramatically. I love to speak with gals of all ages and like to be in great company. But, the all night parties are not fun anymore. Enjoy your Holidays!

Everything about that duster is beautiful, but I especially love the color. I love mixing fancy and casual. My book club just had our annual holiday brunch – I wore jeans with a black velvet jacket and a Christmas tree pin my mom got in the early 50s. The book club is a new circle of friends for me – women I’ve met in the past year or so. They know me as I am now, with no idea of past history unless I share something. The friendships are new but very important to me, despite the lack of much… Read more »

Oh boy Debbie, you have brought up a topic that I wrestle with big time as I’ve have aged & completely severed myself from childhood & college friends. I just don’t fit in, maybe I never did. But, I went back to a 20 year reunion for all the swimmers in college & I couldn’t wait to get out of there fast enough. The deal was, They Were Stuck! Same stories, shenanigans & I had no interest. Same was with my 20 year high school reunion. I was, by far, the one who had changed the most! It was almost… Read more »
