Blush Off The Shoulder Sweater & Mary Jane Pumps: Spanked by Facebook

Blush off the shoulder sweater and mary jane pumps.

So, the other morning I hopped on my Facebook page to add a post and much to my surprise…

THE STORY

…I saw this:

My friends, I had been officially spanked by the Facebook gods. Seriously, wth? I was confused as to…um, why? As you can see above, I had done all of the things that we as responsible bloggers are supposed to do when posting a collaboration; the brand was tagged and my hashtags were in a visible location. Sooo…what’s the problem?

Apparently, way back in March, Facebook changed their branded content policy and added something called the “Branded Content Tool”. Perhaps you are already aware of this (and if you are, how did you know?), I obviously was not aware. Hence, the spanking. I never received any type of notification/email/smoke signal/top secret encrypted message…nothing, nada. So my question is, exactly how were bloggers who collaborate with brands supposed to know of this mysterious Branded Content Tool? Telepathy? Super human psychic abilities? Gypsy fortune teller?

After much research (because Facebook’s Help Center is notoriously umm, unhelpful and difficult to navigate, I found this page which pretty clearly explains it. First, you have to request the tool. Once your request is approved you will have access to it. When you start a new post, you’ll see down in the area where you click to add photos, location, etc. there is now a little shaking hands icon. You click the icon (which I’ve marked with a red arrow below) and then find the brand page that you want to tag and select it.

Apparently though from what I understand in the information that I’ve read, you need approval from the brand prior to tagging them with the tool. Therefore it would behoove you to work this all out with the brand when you are in the initial discussion stage of your collaboration. I have not yet attempted to use the tool as I’ve not had a collaboration post since learning about all of this. Therefore, I’m not sure whether or not you can tag a brand prior to approval from them.

Because I’m a curious sort of girl and because Instagram and Facebook are basically the same beast, I also started researching whether or not Instagram has the same requirements. Lo and behold, they do. It appears though that it hasn’t yet been rolled out to all influencers as of yet. When it does, your Instagram account must be set to “business” in order to access it. I personally do not have access yet, but I do check fairly regularly to see if the tool has appeared yet. This article explains where to find/how to use the tool, and this article (written in November) claims that access to the tool has been expanded to pretty much all influencers. Like I said though, I still don’t seem to have access. I’ll definitely update you all when I do and/or I learn more about it.

THE OUTFIT

This was actually my Christmas Eve outfit. We’re pretty casual ’round these parts so this is about as fancy as I get for the holidays. Fortunately, I chose my nude Mary Jane pumps as my footwear because this month’s Ageless Style Link Up theme is “Retro Look” and Mary Jane pumps have been around forever and a day.

Why fortunately? Well, Christmas Eve night it started snowing and then polar vortex temperatures swooped in and have apparently taken up permanent residence. I have not shot one single outfit since this one. Originally I had planned on wearing this insanely fabulous vintage coat that I have for this post, but friends, I’m sorry…I am simply not dedicated enough to do shots in below 0 temperatures. Then it occurred to me…I had on the Mary Jane pumps in these shots and woohoo…definite retro vibes.

And how cute are my little sheer bedazzled socks? They were made to wear with these pumps. I ain’t gonna lie though, this particular pair is not awesome. The rhinestones went all the way down to the heel area of my foot…ouch! They also don’t have much stretch to them, so I couldn’t pull them up any higher. Therefore I had to pull off a bunch of the bling to make them comfortable enough to wear. But it’s all good because the end result was pretty cute in my opinion.

THE TIP

Socks can really make an outfit. Yes, socks. There is currently such an array of super cute socks that there is a pair for just about everyone and every outfit. I’m all over the sheer slouch socks as well as velvet socks at the moment. They work with pretty much everything, from jeans to a dressier going out look.

I always learn about the new policies from you Debbie!!! It’s a good thing I read your blog, because how would I know otherwise!!
And look at your tulle socks—I just wore mine in the post from Monday! Although after I wore them, I had to add elastic to them because it annoyed me they kept falling down. But don’t you just love them??
Happy 2018

I love the outfit and I love the socks and of course, I love the shoes! I hear you on outfit photos, too! I have none at all in store for upcoming posts and it is just too damn cold around here! We woke up to -20’s this morning with schools on cold temperature frostbite warning delays! And I am so ready for these kids to go back to school! I am going to attempt an indoor photo shoot somewhere tomorrow. We’ll see how that goes. Wishing you a very happy and healthy new year, my friend! Stay warm! Shelbee… Read more »

Debbie, you are such a wealth of information. Honestly I thank you so much for sharing all that you do, it is extremely helpful. In early December I was contacted by two companies who encouraged me to post about a certain topic so they could “share” my post at meetings within their respective companies. There was no mention of compensation and I did do a post that worked for one of the requests. However, I got an email saying that they loved my post but if I’d let them write something up for it it would be even better. Nope,… Read more »

Yikes! How is the part time blogger ever supposed to keep up?!?! Thanks for keeping up with it all. Oh, and you know I love those shoes. And I haven’t ventured out to take any photos either. I’ve been trying to brainstorm some indoor locations that would have decent lighting and not so many people that I’d be embarrassed to take photos.

Debbie – this was such an informative post – thanks so much for keeping all of us in the know. It seems as if there are new things to learn about this whole blogging thing every day! I adore your outfit, especially those cute socks. And I’ve always loved Mary Janes. To me, they’re just one of those classic pieces that belong in every closet!

Debbie,

You are the best teacher I have for blogging!
I really enjoy your blog and look forward to the posts that will help me be a better blogger.
Sorry FaceBook has the same stupid branded tool that it’s little sister, Instagram has.
I still haven’t figured it out yet, but I still a micro influencer and ytou have a larger audience than me.

Happy New Year friend!

Well I had no idea about any of this! It’s so difficult to keep up with the changing rules. I don’t use FB much for the blog, it gets so little engagement that it’s not worth the bother! I’ll have a look for this branded content tool on Instagram though. I love the Mary Janes and the pretty socks! Thanks for linking up, Happy New Year!

It’s pretty ridiculous how all these platforms change the rules willy-nilly, without notifying users, then punish users for not knowing the new rules, urrgghhh. I can hear one of my old criminal justice professors saying “IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NO DEFENSE.” But STILL!!! Why isn’t there One Central Location per platform where All Laws are Written?? It’s like they WANT to catch you up rather than help you succeed. Boo.

Now I’m pissed off and have to go to the bakery for a chocolate danish. THANKS A LOT, FACEBOOK.

Oh, Happy New Year xoxo

Debbie, you look absolutely gorgeous. That pale pink is perfect on you! And I’m in love with your Mary-Janes. I’ve always been a huge fan of those shoes. You must’ve been freezing though! I arrived in New England on Christmas Day and it turned bitterly cold a few days later. We’re currently in Saratoga Springs where it’s a mild 22˚F!!!
As for Facebook, I’d be as lost as you! So thanks for the heads-up my friend.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Drooling over your Mary Janes and beautiful sparkly socks! Such a fabulous way to add a little something extra to jeans and a sweater. I am with you on not getting out for new blog photos – it is seriously too freakin cold! Thankfully I received a lighting kit for Christmas, so I might try my hand at some indoor shoots.

As always, thanks so much for passing along the new FB and IG rules. Boy, how do they actually pass along these kinds of updates???

Love those pretty Mary Janes , I used to have more of them in my closet., back in the day. The soft pastel color you ae wearing is so pretty on you with your hair color too. i love the socks, and laughed a bit about the jewels, i would have done the same! Aggravating about the FB rules and regs along with IG, i had no idea, so thanks! No wonder I get tired of social media. It is cold here too and I am not a fan of the cold! An indoor shot might be in order! thanks… Read more »

This is a bummer! Did they only block that one post or all? When a brand works with you, they want you to share the post and their product on social media unless they state otherwise. Shouldn’t that mean automatically that you have their consense to post about it? Maybe I am naive, but when they have to approve your fb post, what would be the value of that post? They could censor/disapprove all real, fair reviews when they don’t like what you say. On the other hand, when a non-influence bought a new sweater and posts it and tells… Read more »
