I’m going to tell you right up front; this post is political in nature. If you prefer not to read it, that is absolutely fine just simply enjoy the outfit portion of the post…
THE STORY
…If you are feeling like going on a rant because who do I think I am posting something political on a silly little frivolous fashion blog, just don’t. Yes, my content is put out there for you, my readers, but first and foremost this is my space to share my thoughts, ideas, feelings and other randomness. You don’t have to agree with me about everything, but you do have to respect my space. So as I said, you certainly can skip this portion or simply click away. That’s the beauty of the internet; one click and you’re in a different place, no need to stick around and be snarky if that’s the plan.
I rarely ever post anything that is political in any way, but when I do I have a solid reason for it. Today my reason is simple. Tuesday night restored my faith in humanity and my faith in us as a country. Not because of the Democratic resurgence per se; but because of the beautiful diversity of the humans elected to offices, both local and state, all across the country. I say this not necessarily as a Democrat, I say it as a human being.
In the last year our country has seemingly time traveled to a bygone era, an era where it was no longer safe to be “different”. It doesn’t matter if that difference is a result of race, religion, gender, sexual identity or country of origin. If you are different, you are no longer safe. We have been sliding into a dark place where hatred has been given both a spotlight and a bully pulpit from which to speak. Ugliness, rudeness, lying and cruelty have been normalized by a vocal and very visible minority. They have used their loudness and shock tactics in an attempt to drown out the majority. The majority of which I am a vocal part; the majority that believes we are a nation of diversity; the nation that embraces the fact that we are all different and unique and believes that is a beautiful thing.
To me, Tuesday night proved that we, the majority, will not go quietly into the night. We will not simply lie down and take it. We will not accept the hatred and ugliness as the new normal. Why? Because it is not normal, not in any way, shape or form. Because that is not who we are. We will continue to fight for the rights that those before us fought and died for. We will continue to embrace diversity and uniqueness. We will make our voices heard, and we will beat the ugliness back into the hole from which it crawled. At the end of the day every single one of us is different, every single one of us is unique and every single one of us has the right to go to bed at night feeling safe. That my friends, is something worth fighting for. And Tuesday night was evidence that that fight is far from over.
THE OUTFIT
Seriously, how yummy are the fall hues in this outfit? Absolutely some of my favorites. Looking at these shots, in hindsight, I probably could have belted the chenille cardigan to sharpen it up a bit like I had done with this slip dress/cardigan combo. I’ll probably give that a try next time, but ya know what? On this day, in this outfit, I was comfortable, cozy and felt fabulous so really that’s all that matters, right?
I snapped up both the burnout velvet cami and the chenille cardigan last month at JCPenney at a super fabulous bargain price. Both are currently on sale at a great price so grab ’em now if you’re interested. The burgundy velvet maxi skirt I have owned literally since the early 90’s…I guess that makes it sort of vintage. And lucky me, it was perfect with my two new pieces.
THE TIP
If you’re feeling like a cardigan, jacket or blazer is a bit too voluminous…belt it. It will change the whole vibe of your outfit.
