A little over a year ago, I wrote a post about a denim “trend” that I could not even begin to fathom…
THE STORY
…the Wedgie Jeans. Ya, I’m pretty sure that Wedgie Jeans really never became a “trend”. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for trends and trying new things in regard to style. For example all things pink, sleeves with ruffles, slouchy off the shoulder sweaters, tulle skirts with sneakers…yep, those are fashion ideas that I can get behind.
Even when a cool style idea takes off and becomes a trend, that doesn’t mean it’s a cool idea for everybody. We all have different tastes and different styles, so no, not necessarily everyone will be getting behind the latest new idea in fashion. I have to say though, I think I may have happened upon something that I’m pretty sure almost no one, will be waiting in line for like it’s the latest Target designer collaboration. Are you ready for it? Thong jeans. You read that right. Thong jeans.
What exactly are thong jeans? Basically, it’s a pair of jeans comprised of only the leg seams, the crotch seam, the hem and a waistband. I kid you not…take a gander here. Now that you’re back, even if you don’t swear, you gotta be thinking “seriously, wtf”? That my friends, takes distressed denim to an entirely new level does it not? That denim is not only distressed, it’s begging to be put out of it’s misery. And I know that runway models have that broody “I’m too cool for the world” look down to an art form, but did you see that poor girl’s face? She looks like she’s thinking, “What did I do to be the girl that has to walk the runway in a denim chastity belt?”
That’s the beauty of fashion though, to each their own. And I’m sure that somewhere in the world, there is an adventurous soul that can’t wait to get her hands on a pair. Me though? Pretty sure I’m going to have to pass on this one, but if I change my mind I know where my scissors are…
THE OUTFIT
It’s no secret that my favorite way to put together an outfit is mixing pieces that one might not think to put together. For example this city graphic tee, slouchy ankle boots and a pencil skirt. Typically, at least for me, when I think “pencil skirt”, I think business not fun. But pair a pencil skirt with a tee shirt and unexpected shoes and you’ve got fun.
I found the tee at the Pittsburgh Flea this summer. It’s a design by a graphic artist who does a lot of art revolving around city-scapes; skylines, prominent buildings and things like that. The tee I’m wearing is one of his designs featuring places of worship in Pittsburgh. His work includes scenes from Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus and Akron, Ohio. It was just so cool that I couldn’t resist. I also have the same print framed and hanging in my bedroom.
THE TIP
The key to a good tee shirt/pencil skirt combo is getting the right mix of casual and professional. The pencil skirt adds the professional piece, but to get the right amount of casual just a plain tee won’t do…a graphic tee of some sort works best. If you work in an environment where this would be too casual, switch out the boots for pumps and throw a blazer over top and you’re good to go.
