Oftentimes we take things for granted because while we can empathize with others, we forget that everyone does not experience or perceive situations in the same way that we do…
THE STORY
…I was reminded of that yesterday at school. Due to the nature of the kids that I work with I actually do pretty well with realizing that sometimes even the simplest of things is difficult for others to understand. You simply cannot assume that everyone “gets” things that most of us just take for granted. Sometimes though, I do forget that.
Last Friday I had meant to do a little mini lesson on daylight saving time since it ended this past weekend. We ran out of time though and I didn’t get around to it. No biggie right? Everyone knows to set their clocks back in November. While that might be true, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the idea is fully understood. I had no intention of doing it on Monday until a conversation that happened the first thing in the morning.
One of my 6th graders approached my aid; she was very serious and very concerned. She asked, “Since we had that day yesterday when we get to sleep in, what time do we get out of school now at the end of the day?” In other words, since the clocks changed on Sunday, that must have changed the time the school day ended…at least that’s what it meant to her. And that was one of those times that it simply didn’t occur to me that some of my little loves would be confused and simply not understand what happened with the time change. I took it for granted, because to me that’s just something that we know; and I should have known better.
Needless to say, we did have a short lesson on daylight saving time. We watched a video, talked about it, and I explained that it would happen again in the Spring so we would discuss it again when it happened. That’s the beauty of what I do; I always have a fresh perspective on things thanks to my kids. Sometimes it’s difficult because we by nature are prisoners of our own perceptions, but try to keep in mind no matter what the situation is, not everyone experiences it the same way that you do.
THE OUTFIT
As usual, I was really pleased with this month’s Ageless Style Link Up theme…Sweaters and Booties. Seriously, what says Fall more than a cozy sweater and a fabulous pair of boots?
I thought about showcasing one of my more statement making pairs of boots like say, my leopard wedges or my crowd favorite red suede boots, but I decided to go with my favorites; my Birkenstock ankle boots. They are my favorites because not only are they perfectly slouchy cute, but they are so comfortable…I mean c’mon, they’re Birkenstocks. They are so comfortable in fact, I also own them in black. They work with jeans, shorts, skirts…you name it, they’ll work with it. They are the perfect way to add a casual boho touch to any outfit.
The tunic sweater I also own in multiples. I found it at, believe it or not, Walmart a few years back. I believe I own it in five colors. It’s soft, comfy and so easy to dress up or down with jeans or a skirt or layered over a dress. It’s also the just right length to pair with leggings and still have some bum coverage. Today I went with my boyfriend jeans because I wanted to keep it real…this is pretty much how I roll on chilly Fall/Winter weekends. I threw in the front tuck to give some definition to all of the slouchiness and I wanted to make sure the embroidered belt was peeking out since it’s so freakin’ cute.
THE TIP
While the general rule is to pair a loose fitting piece with a more form fitting piece, i.e. leggings with a tunic sweater, I’m not one for general rules. You can pair loose with loose if you add a hint of definition. The easiest styling trick to add some definition is the front tuck. I’m a huge fan and do it all of the time; not only for the definition, but also for comfort. Oftentimes I’m just not comfortable with a full tuck. To further define your waist you can also add a belt like I did here.
