Different Is Good

Different is good. As a matter of fact, it’s often the thing that makes us different that’s actually our superpower…

WHY DIFFERENT IS GOOD

It’s basic human nature that causes us to spend most (if not all) of our lives trying to fit in. To think the same as everyone else. To speak the same as everyone else. To dress the same as everyone else. To be just like every other human in our perceived tribe. The problems with this line of thinking are many, but the biggest problem, the one that explains why being just like everyone else makes absolutely no sense is this…the desire to fit in is nothing more than an instinct leftover from back in the caveman days. You know, back when if you didn’t fit in you got the boot from the tribe & if you were really having a bad day, fed to a wild beastie.

See? It doesn’t make sense to hide your superpower nowadays. Sure, you might get cut loose from the tribe, but at least you won’t be the main course on tonight’s menu. And honestly, if the tribe cuts you loose for being your own fabulous self, were they ever really your tribe at all? No my friend, if that happens it’s time for you to find a new tribe.

Knowing who you really are, being your own amazing unique self, embracing all the little bits that make you you is critical in order for you to live the life that you want, the life that brings you joy. True contentment isn’t happening for you if you’re still trying to convince yourself that it’s okay to live in the cage that society (the tribe) built for you years ago.

Stand up. Stand out. Let your freak flag fly. Be true to yourself & no one else. Trust me on this. The feeling of freedom when you finally do is like nothing else. It wasn’t that long ago that I was still wasting my life trying to fit in, trying to be like everyone else because I was so sure they were better than me. I said what I thought were the right words, wore what I thought were the right clothes & did what I thought were the right things.

Guess what? I was wrong. I wasn’t being true to myself. I was hiding the best parts of me. I was ignoring my own superpowers. The comfort zone inside the cage was suffocating me. So I picked the lock on the cage & got the hell out. And now here I am in all of my pink haired glory wearing whatever I damn well please, speaking my mind, blazing my own trail & living my life for me. And I’ve never felt so f-ing amazing. Different is good.

DRESSING DIFFERENT IS GOOD TOO

One of my superpowers is putting together outfits with pieces that just shouldn’t work together…but somehow do. Take this vintage sequin jacket for example. A lot of people might look at it & say, “What in the hell would I wear that with & where exactly am I wearing it?” Not me though. Nope. I threw this bad girl on with a lace slip dress & my Doc’s & wore it to a middle school full of ‘tweens. And then I wore it out to run errands because why not?

The possibilities are endless when it comes to dressing yourself. If you’re feeling uninspired look at your pieces with a new eye. Pull out things that at first glance might not work. Try them on…play around…have fun with your clothes. Be unique. Be different. Be you.
