The phrase “honor your wild” might be misconstrued. Perhaps that’s because the actual definition is “living or growing in the natural environment; not domesticated or cultivated”…
THE STORY
…I think it might be the “not domesticated or cultivated” part that throws people off. When you think wild, maybe what comes to mind is a herd of marauding wildebeests…or a herd of marauding college girls dancing on the bar with abandon.
Honoring your wild though is something entirely different. From the time that we are very young girls are indoctrinated into the ways of being a “good girl”. We are taught how to behave, speak & think in order to fit into the self-limiting cages society has built for us. Well intentioned or not, this indoctrination buries the very essence of who we are…the traits that make us unique, original, beautiful…and wild.
“Good girls aren’t hungry, furious, or wild. All of the things that make a woman human are a good girl’s dirty secret.” ~Glennon Doyle
You see, your wild is who you were before the world changed you into who it wants you to be. Your wild is the very essence of that little human who was able to see & feel all of the joy, wonder & magic in the world and in herself. Your wild is your permission to feel everything, to experience it all. The laughter, the joy, the love, the anger, the hunger, the heartbreak…all of it…all of the things that make life worth living.
Honoring your wild doesn’t mean going feral like the neighborhood cat that insists on peeing on your front porch. It means freeing yourself from the cage you’ve existed in your entire life, the cage that maybe you didn’t realize was even there until you opened your eyes up wide. It means rediscovering who you really truly are deep in your heart and setting that wild beautiful woman free.
In order to set yourself free, you are going to have to be willing and open to diving deep & doing some internal work. You are going to need to think long and hard about the joyful little girl that you used to be; the same little girl that still lives inside you to this day. Look at the world through her eyes again. Feel the world with her heart. Accept that so much of what you have always as an adult thought was “right”, is in fact, very very wrong.
Start right now, today, tearing it all down to the foundation if need be. Break free of that cage and never look back. And from this point forward, every single day, with intention, honor your wild…
THE OUTFIT
I saw this tee and…I. Had. To. Have. It. It literally spoke to me. So much of what I’ve been doing and working on during this strange & alien season is working on myself, finding out more about who I really am & how I want to live my life. And the phrase “Honor Your Wild” is a perfect reminder of the path that I’m now on. I’m a huge fan of graphic tees, especially when they are meaningful and this one could not have been more timely.
I swear that pairing this particular graphic tee with a leopard print silk skirt wasn’t intentional. Truth be told, I originally planned to wear it with my pink silk skirt. However since I was going to a (very safely social distanced) graduation party for my niece and it had been raining all day leading up to it, I figured a print would better hide any errant wet marks than pink would. On a side note, yes, one could argue that silk skirts & graphic tees are overdone & played out. Tough shit I say. I’ve been pairing the two for years & I’m not going to stop now that everyone else has decided that it’s the cool thing to do.
I belted it because it looked rather ‘meh’ just hanging there untucked. Tucking or even front tucking were both out because it would interfere with the graphic, hence the belt. The sandals were chosen out of necessity. Since my foot is still not back to where it needs to be a wrap is required & these are the only sandals that fit properly over the bandage so that was that.
THE TIP
Don’t fear the graphic tee. Somewhere along the way (I’m looking at you Stacey & Clinton) women got it into their heads that graphic tees were a no-fly zone for women over whatever age. I will never forget the episode of What Not To Wear when Stacey & Clinton made this woman throw out her entire collection of absolutely stellar graphic tees. What in the literal hell my friends?? Even way back then, I knew that was just all sorts of wrong.
98% of the time when I buy a graphic tee it’s because something about it speaks to me; it either means something to me personally or represents an aspect of who I am. The other 2%? Sometimes I just think a tee is pretty…And there it is, if you think something is pretty or it speaks to you on a gut level…then wear it!
