Today’s story isn’t going to be a long one, but it is a special one…
THE STORY
…Actually it’s almost magical; magical in that weird unexplained way that the universe sometimes works. Last Sunday was big hair color day. Not root touch up day mind you, all of it from the ground up…first a re-do of the red, then the blonde ombre and highlights and finally the pink. I ended up running out of time and didn’t get the pink done. No big deal, I figured I’d wait until my next hair wash day and throw on the pink.
Tuesday at school I was walking with one of my students and we were just chatting about nonsense when she says, “You need to dye your hair pink so you’re like the fairies.” She has some difficulties with her speech so I thought that I had to have misheard her because this child has no clue of my big love for fairies nor does she know what a fashion blog is or that I have one that happens to have “fairy” in the name. She does however have an intense interest in video games and zombies…this is definitely not a girl who is into princesses and fairies.
So I say to her, “Did you say fairies?” She gave me a look like like I was utterly ridiculous and emphatically states, “YES…FAIRIES. Pink hair like the fairies.” ‘Nuff said baby girl. I put the pink back into my hair today.
THE OUTFIT
I actually wear this leopard print (it’s really not leopard, but I don’t know what else to call it) skirt fairly often although the last time it made the blog I had styled it for much warmer weather with a graphic tee. I tend to wear this one more than the other leopard print skirt that I have because I prefer it’s length and flowiness.
These shots were taken awhile back when it was much snowier (obviously), windy and cold; hence the cozy red sweater. Whenever I wear a looser fitting pullover sweater I typically tend to do a front tuck like I’ve done here. It adds some shape to the look while still allowing for the intended slouchiness of the sweater. Occasionally I’ll throw on a belt as well although I didn’t this particular day.
I chose my harness boots because I liked the opposition of the more masculine boot with the flowy silkiness of the skirt. I’ve also found that a lot of times my over the knee boots interfere with the flow of a skirt depending on it’s length and the material from which it’s made.
THE TIP
One way to prevent a basic sweater/skirt/boots outfit from becoming a snooze-fest is to mix textures and styles. The chucky cozy knit of the sweater provides a nice juxtaposition with the silky skirt as do the more masculine style harness boots.
