As I write this on Wednesday night Instagram and Facebook have been down for approximately twelve hours…
THE STORY
…And it would seem that the human race is currently imploding. I have not been this amused by mass human behavior in a long time. When I initially began to investigate if there was a problem when my evening Insta post wouldn’t publish, I first turned to Google. There I found a number of articles confirming that there was indeed a problem…on a major worldwide scale no less. My next stop, as always when something newsworthy is happening, was Twitter. I’m not much for tweeting myself, but I have to say that Twitter is my favorite source for grassroots real time information heavily laced with humor and irony. And trust me, Twitter did not disappoint.
There were of course memes galore, snarky sarcastic humor, weird conspiracy theories and bazillions of people in just as many languages losing their collective sh*t over the disappearance of Instagram and to a lesser extent, Facebook. Don’t get me wrong, sure I was bummed that I couldn’t post my evening ootd shot and scroll my feed for awhile, but did I melt down over it? Um, no. My life and my blog existed long before Instagram and will continue on if the ‘gram one day vanishes permanently in the night.
While it was wildly amusing, it was also sad if you look a little deeper. The blackout shone a stark spotlight on the fact that way too many people have centered their entire existence around social media. It’s true that social media has become an integral part of daily life for much of the world. It has in fact woven its web through the personal and work lives of countless people. I think the problems happen though when one becomes too emotionally invested in it. I feel like if you can’t hold your sh*t together through one day of no Instagram then perhaps you need to do a bit of personal reevaluating. Seriously, think about it…what would happen if it had never come back? There would be a lot of lost souls wandering the world…it’s as if a segment of the population has forgotten that there is an actual real world on the other side of their phone screen.
Fortunately for the collective psyche of the world, Instagram and Facebook did indeed return, as I’m sure you’re probably aware. The return was promptly followed by the collective sigh of relief heard ’round the world. Instapocalypse averted…
THE OUTFIT
I have worn this leopard slip dress a bunch of times since I got it a few months back. It’s been on my Instagram (ironic, I know), but not the blog until today. I cannot wait until it’s warm enough to wear it as an actual slip dress because it’s a beauty my friends. It has these pretty black lace insets under the bust which also lends it a hit of sexiness.
In any case when I wore this a few weeks back the weather was nowhere in the range of “warmer” so the turtleneck layered over top and the tights underneath were a sad necessity. The harness boots and moto jacket served to toughen things up a little bit. This slip dress will make the perfect Summer night date look too paired with strappy black sandals and some delicate layered necklaces.
As for the “clutch”, it’s actually more of a large wallet that perfectly fits my phone, cards and some cash. I don’t like lugging my purse everywhere that I go, and when I got my pretty coral iPhone a few months ago I didn’t want to cover it with the wallet phone cases I typically used. This way my phone is safely tucked away and when I take it out to use it I can see the pretty coral color through the clear protective case that’s on it. I still have my purse with me (because hey, a girl needs her stuff), but I leave it in my Jeep safely tucked away in the handy secret compartment. I actually have clutch/wallets like this in several colors so I switch them out depending on what I’m wearing. I’m a bad style blogger because I never ever do that with purses…I’m simply too lazy, but switching these out is quick and easy.
THE TIP
Instead of schlepping a heavy bag with you every single place you go, try a smaller clutch/wallet hybrid on for size. It’s an easy way to add a whole lot of variety to your wardrobe via accessories.
