Well, I’m sad to say that this is the year. We knew it was inevitable just as all parents know that it’s inevitable…
THE STORY
…The Christmas magic has come to an end. Baby girl no longer believes. She is going to be thirteen in a few months so it wasn’t exactly unexpected. In all honesty we’re pretty sure that last year she pretended to believe just to humor us.
I still love Christmas, but at least for me, it was always so much more special when the kids believed. The magic reindeer food, the sleigh tracks and hoof prints my husband would make in the snow in the middle of the night, the note that Santa would leave…it just made it all so much more magical. It’s almost like as an adult I had the chance to believe again through the eyes of my kids.
Alas, all good things must come to an end. I have to admit though, I’m not going to miss that damn Elf On The Shelf. I swear to you, he was the bane of my existence. I can’t tell you how many times we had to come up with some witty fabrication because that freakin’ elf forgot to move over night. It was like the tooth fairy if the tooth fairy came every single night. And nobody needs that in their life.
THE OUTFIT
My favorite plaid slip dress; I’m not sure why I don’t wear it all year. It is after all, a slip dress. And I wear plaid regardless of season. Something about this particular dress though just says “Winter” to me. Honestly, I think it’s the color scheme. It is the perfect layering piece for colder weather. It looks good with a turtleneck underneath it or with layers over top like this outfit. I love all slip dresses for this reason; they truly are the perfect layering piece.
The plaid slip dress with the button down over top and layered chokers was a nod to the 90’s, minus the grunge. Instead of combat boots I added my favorite over the knee boot which keeps it current. I opted for my Berkshire textured tights because I liked the mix of the lace trim on the dress with the pattern in the tights. The varied length of the layers helps to keep things interesting.
THE TIP
Mixing plaids…this is a print mix not for the faint of heart. The key is really twofold in my opinion. Keep the plaids within the same color palette and also make sure to vary the scale of the plaids. The print on the dress is a little busier and there’s more going on with the multiple colors, whereas the black and white window pane print on the shirt is much simpler.
