Red Hooded Sweatshirt & Black Pumps: A Different Perspective

Red hooded sweatshirt, khakis and black pumps. How to style a sweatshirt for everyday wear.

I often write stories about my students. How can I not? They bring so much light to my life. Today though I’ve got a quick story about a boy who isn’t a part of my class…

THE STORY

…I’ve mentioned in the past that this year for the first time, I have lunch duty. I ain’t gonna lie and say it’s my favorite time of the day. Think about it, would you really want to be in a room with half of the population of a middle school for a half an hour of unstructured time involving food? No, I didn’t think so.

It’s not awful, it’s just not at the top of my list of things I love to do. I have to tell you though, there is one bright spot. There is this adorable little sixth grade boy who from the start of the year would occasionally come over and chat with me about this or that. Well now it’s become a daily thing. At some point without fail, he amble over and strike up a conversation about whatever. One day it might be, “What’s 300 x 300 equal?” or “What did you think of the Ohio State game?” quickly followed by “What do you mean you don’t like sports??” or perhaps, “So, do you think it’s going to snow tonight?”

You get the idea…whatever he can come up with to talk about. What makes it so much fun is that he is super bright and very articulate so we have these great back and forth conversations that just make me laugh. I’ve said it before, but if you don’t have any kids in your direct orbit, you really need to, at least every once in awhile, borrow one from a friend or a neighbor and have a conversation. I truly believe it’s a very good thing for adults to take a minute every now and then to get out of our grownup heads and be reminded what it’s like to view the world from the perspective of a child. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised by what you learn.

THE OUTFIT

Lately I’ve been all about the sweatshirt love. I seem to go through phases like that. Something catches my fancy and then I wear lots of it. This red hooded sweatshirt though, like the other sweatshirts I’ve sported lately, has a special detail; the split hem on both the front and the back. It doesn’t hurt that it’s super soft and while cozy, still lightweight enough that the hood doesn’t weigh you down. I wore it to the Women’s March last weekend with my omnipresent distressed jeans, but yesterday I upgraded it for work. I simply swapped out the distressed jeans and sneakers for olive khaki pants, pumps and a leopard clutch and I was good to go.

Originally I was going to pair it with my leather pencil skirt and boots, but then I remembered the olive pants and that was it. I’ve always liked the red/olive combo and I haven’t done it for awhile so the leather skirt returned to the closet for another day. It was chilly yesterday, but still not winter chilly, so the denim jacket was the perfect finishing touch.

THE TIP

Nothing beats a good basic whether we’re talking the perfect tee, sublime denim or a cozy sweatshirt. Sometimes though, it’s fun to add a twist to a basic with special details. A peplum on a tee, embroidered denim or a variation on the usual hem of a sweatshirt all are examples of a basic with a little extra something. And sometimes we can all use a little extra something.

Ohh, but that’s no ordinary sweatshirt, Debbie! That cool hemline just made my heart pitter patter!!
And really, your insight into hanging out with a child now and again is quite spot on. You can gleam so much from the mouth of babes. Just like I think it can be just as enlightening to spend time with the older folks—it’s always amazing some of the times they lived through and how things have changed!!

I agree. It’s enlightening and often humorous to talk to children. Seeing the world through their eyes forces us to re-evaluate our own view.

What a lovely story! I think that we as adults think far to difficult and children see things so uncomplicated. Thats very refreshing. But we dont have kids, actually none of our friends do. You are wearing fantastic shoes, I like it compaired with the sturdy pants.

Kids have a different perspective on things and they can really make you see things in a different way. Love the hemline on your sweatshirt!
