Tulle Skirt & Floral Print Dress: A Story Two For One

Today is going to be a two different and unrelated stories consolidated into one story day…

THE STORY

…A story two for one if you will. First up is the fun collaboration with my friend Kim at the Fierce Fashion Blog. Actually it’s more like a non-collaboration because apparently Kim was collaborating and I wasn’t. A few weeks ago Kim had asked if I’d like to do a tulle skirt post together; of course I was up for that! Tulle skirts are awesome, collaborating with friends is awesome, so hecks ya.

I was going to email her over the weekend to confirm, but like it sometimes does, time got away from me and I never sent the email. I had it in my head for some reason that the post was to go up today…even though I had it written down for Tuesday…ya, it was supposed to be Tuesday. I figured that out when Kim commented on my Tuesday post and said something along the line of “Ya, I love your outfit, but I posted my tulle skirt today…” Oops. My sincerest apologies and a big hug go out to Kim since she doesn’t normally post on Tuesdays and I stood her up.

Definitely take a minute right now and head over to check out Kim’s killer tulle skirt style. She put together a really cool original look by layering a longer jacket over her skirt; definitely something you wouldn’t necessarily think to do, but it really looks incredible!

Now for the second story…

I’ve mentioned in the past that I love sky-watching. I’ve written about laying outside for hours to watch the Perseid meteor shower, and my daughter and I made an event out of the solar eclipse a few years ago.

Just a little while ago this evening, I got to see a really cool sky event that I wasn’t even aware existed. Thanks to my husband’s sharp eye I witnessed something fascinating and beautiful and I learned something new too. He came in from bringing the garbage dumpster back and said, “There’s some sort of spaceship out there blinking and hovering in one spot in the sky…”

Well, you know I was all over that in a hot second. I’m not arrogant enough to believe that we’re the only life in the entire galaxy, and if we were getting visitors I was going to be first in line to check it out…so I’d know firsthand if we had new interstellar BFF’s or if I’d needed to make a run for it to escape the alien apocalypse.

Anyhow, initially looking at it with the naked eye, I thought it was a star. But when I looked at it through binoculars it was indeed very stationary…and very clearly blinking bright red and bright green in an alternating pattern. How fun…the aliens brought pretty twinkle lights to communicate with! Okay, before I got too carried away with that idea I consulted my best friend Google, and lo and behold…Capella.

Apparently Capella is the 6th brightest star in our sky, and if you live in the Northern Hemisphere it’s very noticeable low in the northeastern sky at nightfall in October. And it is indeed flashing true red and true green; the reason is because when Capella is low in the sky our atmosphere refracts the light from it’s normal twinkle and changes it to a beautiful red and green sparkle. It is seriously very pretty, so if you happen to live in an area where you can see it, pick up some binoculars and enjoy the show!

THE OUTFIT

I was really excited to do the collab post with Kim because it pushed me to come with an original way to style one of my tulle skirts. I typically default to graphic tees and or sneakers with my tulle and I wanted to do something different. Apparently Kim and I were on the same wavelength with styling our skirts (but obviously now with dates…lol). She went with a longer jacket for an original twist, and I decided to layer mine under an unbuttoned floral print sundress and plaid shirt.

I’m loving how it turned out. All day long I felt all sorts of swooshy…when I walked both the dress and skirt moved beautifully together. If I stood one way it looked like I was simply wearing a dress, but move just a bit and surprise…there’s a tulle skirt peaking out! The colors all played well together too. I thought that the pink, burgundy and mauve shades paired really nicely with the taupe boots.

THE TIP

I think that a tulle skirt is a solid addition to any closet. It’s a myth that they are hard to style and they aren’t just for ballerinas or 5 year old girls. You can honestly wear a tulle skirt anywhere that you would wear any other style of skirt. They are easy to dress up or down and they inject a little bit of fun into any look. And who doesn’t want to feel like a swooshy princess for a day?

LOVE LOVE LOVE the red tulle skirt with the dress, Debbie! I just adore tulle skirts too and I wouldn’t have thought to wear one under a dress but it looks freaking fantastic! Capella sounds pretty amazing too…. it’s a shame I’m not far enough north to see it!

Well, two fun stories and one great outfit! Love what you did with your tulle skirt – so different and fun – you are so creative Debbie! Kim did a great job with hers too. Thanks for teaching me about Capella – very interesting. I would have thought it was aliens too!

Thanks for the shout out and mea culpa. Hugs right back to you! Your tulle skirt is amazing styled as a big ol’ petticoat. Of course, love the added plaid. That is so cool about Capella–sorry there weren’t any aliens to greet!

I love how you styled this skirt Debbie!! It’s so embarrassing when those things happen, but I’m trying to learn to give myself grace. One time I was collaborating with a blogger and I had my post go live at 3 pm instead of 3 am….ugh!! But what can you do? We are only human.

You are, indeed, swooshy! This look is so lovely…sort of shabby grunge prairie princess! I had a similar OOPS today at work…my camera club meetings got rearranged this week…and then a group canceled…and then another rescheduled in from a rainy day earlier in the week, and then someone was getting picked up early for speech therapy…and I was driving from one to the next and all of a sudden I was like WAIT. WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO BE…AND WHEN?! And I was NOT where I was supposed to be right then, gah. So…you were in good company. Or *I*… Read more »

I love this outfit and wore the very same a couple of weeks ago – minus the shirt over the top, although that’s a great idea for future styling!! Thank you for sharing – and very interesting about the star … we are always learning new things!!

You are so clever. Love how you have a signature style. Your own version of boho chic. This is a prime example. Taking several separates that might not naturally be paired together and creating this fabulous, floaty, feminine look.

Debbie, I seriously love everything about this post! Yep, even the part where you stood Kim up! Not because I have anything against Kim. I adore Kim. But because it made me feel like much less of loser the multiple times I have stood up blogger friends on a collaboration post day! Yep, I have done it multiple times and I get so embarrassed when I do it. I know, I know, I give the impression that I mostly have my shit together. And I mostly do, but I kinda mostly don’t as well! The outfit is spectacular and I… Read more »
