Velvet Kimono & Lace Up Boots: The End Of The World As We Know It

Velvet kimono, black skinny jeans and lace up boots.

This month’s Ageless Style Link Up theme is most definitely a juicy one…

THE STORY

…A big shoutout to Daenel for her insane creativity. We were challenged with styling a look based on inspiration from a favorite character from a book, movie or television show. My mind immediately went to one theme…the apocalypse. Yes, I said apocalypse. I’m a weirdo, and I’m always game for lettin’ my freak flag fly.

I love anything involving a story about the apocalypse and/or the post-apocalyptic world. I have no sane explanation for such a strange obsession. I own a bazillion books, dvd’s of my favorite apocalyptic movies, and I’ll give any television show with the theme a shot. I’m often asked if I’ve watched The Walking Dead, which I haven’t. Why? While I will occasionally dabble in the zombie apocalypse, zombies are just too much of a long shot fro me in an apocalyptic scenario. I think that’s why I love the end of the world plotline…it scares the crap out of me because it could happen. Zombies? Not so much.

Which leads me to my character of choice…Lexa from The 100. My daughter and I binge watched it on Netflix, in its entirety last Summer and we’re now eagerly awaiting a new season. Sadly, my adoration of Lexa was cut short; they killed her off. Seriously, wth? That’s one thing about the show; they will kill characters off with absolutely no regard to their importance to the show nor the love of their fans.

Lexa was the seriously badass commander of the Grounder clans who were living in a post-apocalyptic world 97 years post nuclear annihilation. She was fierce and ruthless when it came to protecting her own, but on the other hand she could also be compassionate and caring…and all while rockin’ the style of a hardcore post-apocalyptic queen. I also liked the fact that she was a strong lesbian character in love with Clarke, her former archenemy. In my opinion there can never be enough inclusiveness both in entertainment and reality.

Actually, most of the outfits/costumes on the show are pretty badass. Lexa is my favorite though because she has a propensity towards wearing long flowy coats (see photo below right), combat boots and the occasional hit of velvet thrown in. The mystery that my daughter and I have not been able to solve though? The world as we know it ended in nuclear annihilation 97 years prior. So where is it exactly that these people find all of their uber cool clothing?

THE OUTFIT

Oh, you guys…I could have gone so many directions with this. The slightly more casual route with a lace cami and a leather jacket thrown in would’ve been so much more fun, but I had to make it work appropriate. That I suppose actually made it more challenging and interesting. Think about it for a second…how do you a balance a look that says “badass leader of a band of post-apocalyptic heathens” with a look that says “small town middle school teacher”? Believe me, that in and of itself is a challenge.

I knew my base needed to be black and that I needed a long duster/jacket/kimono layered over top. I went with my black skinny jeans and a long sheer black top layered over a cami for my foundation. The gray velvet kimono was a no-brainer for the top layer as it stuck with the darker moodier theme and um, it’s velvet. I decided to go with my knee high lace up boots as opposed to my combat boots because, well, it’s important to have leg protection when an impromptu sword fight in the woods could break out at any moment, am I right?

THE TIP

Always be on the lookout for inspiration, it can be anywhere. From your favorite bloggers, to people in real life, movies, books, nature, art…inspiration can literally strike from a million different sources. Just keep an open eye and an open mind…

Debbie, you are my soul sister because I always want what you’re wearing, you are hilarious (how to wear apocalypse and business styles at the same time…lol), and your beliefs are like mine! How much more can we have in common? I also want to tell you that your creativity is alive and well, so it’s time for you to recognize that you can be realistic and creative at the same time. 🙂 I’ve been planning on a future article on post-apocalyptic style, so this was really great for me to see. If you let me, I’ll include a photo… Read more »

I’ve always been a HUGE fan of post apocalyptic movies and books too, Debbie! Ever since reading Z for Zachariah as a child (I actually recently bought it but haven’t re-read it yet). I haven’t watched The 100 though but by the sounds of it, I need to. I’ll check it out this weekend YAY! I just LOVE the inspiration behind your outfit and laughed out loud when you said you had to make it also appropriate for a small town middle school teacher. That’s brilliant lol! And you did a fab job – it’s a gorgeous outfit on you.… Read more »

Oh Debbie, I LOVE this post!!! You are brilliant and hilarious: “…it’s important to have leg protection when an impromptu sword fight in the woods could break out at any moment, am I right?” Love, love, love your inspiration and imagination, because hey, after all, fashion should be FUN! This is such a wonderful idea. You’ve helped inspire me to get my butt in gear and start my own blog (in all my spare time…hmmmm…). Many thanks! And yeah…where DID they get their cool clothes? 😉

great choice I love the 100, and actually every apocalyptic movie/show there is . But I can also do Vampires and Zombies.
Today I guess I am channeling Leigh Anne Tuohy from the Blind Side in my football jersey LOL

Debbie,

You girls and your theme for this ageless linkup!
I haven’t watched the 100 on Netflix, I’m still watching Frankie and Grace.
I don’t watch stuff that is scary, but if someone’s dressed in boho chic, smoking a joint, and selling vibrators to menopausal women, I’m all in! LOL!!

Hugs,
Robin

Girl, you nailed it, all the while making sure it was office appropriate. Lol! I am glad you went with your lace-up boots because I think they are just perfect for a post-apocalyptic ensemble. I have never watched The 100, so I read up on it over on IMDB and now I have a new show to watch!

You nailed it! I absolutely adore those boots. ‘Cause you know I’m a lace-up boots kinda girl. I’ve never seen The 100 but I’m a big ol’ fan of The Walking Dead. That being said, I do have a plan, you know, just in case….

Funny store, kinda: my coworker once told me to be careful what I wear because that may be my last look for all of eternity. LOL

Aww, thanks for all the kindness! And your inspired look is awesome – and now you’ve given me another good show to watch. My husband and I both enjoy “bad future” movies, like Blade Runner and Clockwork Orange. The current state of government in the US makes it a little harder to watch the “bad future”! thanks for linking up and for hosting, xox

My word, Debbie! You are definitely a kick ass leader of something in this amazing outfit. Kick ass leader of style icons! This kimono is freaking life. It’s all silvery and shiny like some post apocalyptic queen would wear. And the boots. The boots. The boots. All of it. I swoon and I want to wear this outfit!
