Vintage Coat & Sequin Clutch: Model For A Day

Vintage Coat, sequin clutch and high low shirt.

The way that each blogger captures her/his shots varies from person to person…

THE STORY

…Some bloggers work exclusively with professional photographers. Others have a spouse or family member take their shots. Still others, like myself take their own photos. I use my DSLR camera along with a tripod and remote; it took years of practice, but I’ve gotten the drill of taking my own photos down pretty well. Sometimes if I’m just doing shots with my phone, my daughter or one of my friends will snap for me, and sometimes I get the rare treat of having my son around to get some shots.

I’m still a little bit weirdly awkward when other people do the photos for me, even my kids or close friends. I can’t explain it…like I said, weird. That’s one of the reasons why I said yes when I was contacted by Julie Kahlbaugh, a Pittsburgh based photographer, last Summer about working together. I knew that I wanted to do the shoot in late Fall and I most definitely wanted it to be in the city since my shots are predominately in a rural setting. I figured that it would be good experience to have someone else do the shooting. Plus it gave me another opportunity to spend the day in the city with both of my kids.

You guys…it was so much fun! At first I was apprehensive; you know, the whole “everybody’s going to be staring at me” thing. Here’s yet another difference between small towns and big cities that I’ve discovered; small towns…people stare, big cities…people could care less. After about ten minutes I loosened up and totally enjoyed myself. Julie made it easy. She’s a really cool woman with a great eye and that made it all the more fun for me.

My favorite part? The crossing the street in traffic shots…could I be more of a tourist? Here’s the thing though, I always think that those shots look so cool, but when you take your own photos it’s not like you can set up your tripod in the middle of a busy street, amirite? The “here I am nonchalantly sipping my latte” shots were so much fun too because who doesn’t sit at an outdoor table in the cold misty rain with their accessories artfully displayed on the table? That’s the beauty of fashion photographs; you can do peculiar things for the sake of a good outfit shot while still looking like it’s something totally normal.

We made plans to get together again for a late Spring/early Summer shoot and I can’t wait! You won’t have to wait until then though for more of Julie’s handiwork. We shot another outfit the same day and I promise it will be coming soon to the blog.

THE OUTFIT

This vintage coat…I mean what more can I say? It’s only the beginning of December and this is the second time I’ve featured it; coincidentally the first time was last month’s Ageless Style Link Up, and it has made a number of appearances on my Instagram. It also inspired this month’s Ageless Style Link Up theme which I came up with, “Festive Outerwear”. Keeping in mind that we come from a plethora of climates, my definition of festive outerwear was simply what you would throw over an outfit to go out during the holiday season.

Since the coat was the intended star of this look (seriously, how could it not be), I kept the outfit itself basic; black skinny jeans and a white blouse. I went with this particular blouse because I liked how the long ruffled back flowed with the skirt of the coat.

I used my accessories to further highlight the beautiful bright red of the coat. I think the silver sequins and red plaid make it stand out even more than it already does.

What a fun experience and you look amazing as always! My husband takes my pics but I’d like to do my own. The problem is my camera doesn’t have a remote, just a timer so I’d be running back and forth. I would like to try it though just need to take the time and go for it. I always love your beautiful photos and the rural setting is gorgeous. Great idea to switch it up and work in the city for this one!
That coat is so pretty and festive!

Debbie, these photos are amazing! It is always fun to get a professional photographer every now and then! And you are so right, people in the city don’t pay any attention. In the small town, though, wow do they stare when you shoot photos in public! I am loving this outfit, your vintage coat and gorgeous clutch! I can’t wait to see the other photos.

How amazing to work with a photographer, Debbie! I had no idea you took your own photos. I do, too! But, I do not have a remote, so I have to set the delay timer, get into the shot and do it all over again. I understand that it’s odd to have someone else take your photos, as I feel the same way. Anyway, you look phenomenal, as always, I’m look forward to seeing the rest of your pro photos!

Woman, you need to work with this photographer lady as often as you can. The texture and vibrancy of these photos. The saturation is out of this world. Each shot is like seeing a rainbow for the first time all over again. I wanted to thank you, for inviting me to be a guest co-host this month, Debbie, I was so very happy when your DM came in through Instagram. I had SO much fun shooting this outfit. I mean, I’ll admit when you told me the theme, I panicked. Then arranged a shoot, and then picked out what I… Read more »

These pictures turned out fantastic! I take all my own photos too but every now and again have hired someone or gotten a family member to shoot for me and it’s so nice to get some of those shots you just cannot take of yourself. Definitely some treasures here!

What a difference a professional photographer can make! One of these days I might get lucky enough to work with one. I’m not holding my breath though.

The shots turned out amazing and your hair is fantastic!

And I get it. I’m the same way when someone else takes my photo. I also look completely different {to my eye} when someone else takes my pictures.
