What Exactly Is A Coach~And Why Would I Hire One?

self-image coach_confidence coach_life coach

What exactly is a (life, spiritual, relationship, self-image, business, etc…) coach? What do they do? And why in the hell would I need one? These are all fair questions my friend & I’m going to answer them for you right now…

WHAT EXACTLY IS A COACH?

First & foremost, a coach is not a therapist. Let’s clear up that misperception right outta the gate shall we? Therapy focuses on the past & healing past wounds while coaching is forward focused, goal focused, momentum focused. As a matter of fact, coaching & therapy are perfect complementary services for one another.

A coach will guide you, teach you & help you to improve yourself. Coaching is all about the present & the future, it’s about action, moving you forward from where you are to where you want to be. More specifically, you taking the actions necessary to move yourself forward towards your own unique goals whatever they may be…increased confidence & self-image, weight loss, business related, life purpose, the list is endless. And there is a coach out there who can help you in every area imaginable.

The job of any type of coach is to make space for you & really listen. A coach will ask deep powerful questions designed to make you think & to help illuminate the blocks that have been holding you back from where you want to be. A coach will guide you into holding yourself accountable for taking the steps necessary to transform yourself & your life.

I was recently asked, “People actually pay someone to coach them?”. The answer to that is a resounding 100% YES. My friends, many (if not most) of the most successful humans on the planet either currently have or have had a coach. Oprah, Barack Obama, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will & Jada Smith, Tony Robbins (yes, even coaches often have a coach), Richard Branson, Serena Williams…the list is endless. And here’s the reason why. Successful people don’t get to where they want to be & then just chill. They want to keep improving, growing, moving forward & they want to do it faster & with better results. Enter, the coach.

And yes, regular people hire coaches too. I worked with a business coach last year (I wouldn’t be where I am right now if it weren’t for her) & I’m scheduled for a breakthrough session with a marketing coach as we speak. Several of my good friends have also hired coaches. Why? Because we too wanted faster & better results. And a coach is exactly how you’ll get faster & better results as opposed to going it alone.

BUT I CAN DO IT MYSELF…FOR WAY LESS MONEY

Sure, there’s always Google. And self-improvement books. And podcasts. And TED Talks. All of which I highly recommend, btw. However, let’s consider 2 points:

  1. Do you realize how much of your precious time & energy it would take to piece together all of the information that you think you need? And I say “think” because while the information is for sure useful, all that you really need is inside you right now. A coach will show you how to dig it out, put it to good use, live it, own it and actually become what it is you truly desire.
  2. If you can do it on your own, then why are you still stuck where you’ve always been? It’s not because you’re lazy, or lack intelligence or even desire. It’s because your brain is evolutionarily wired to keep you safe, to keep you in your comfort zone, to keep you stuck. You need guidance & a kick in the ass to start the forward momentum so that you can get to where you want to be & start living your best life. A coach is that kick in the ass.

No, coaching isn’t cheap. However, I consider coaches to be in the same category as tattoo artists & lawyers…if you try to cheap ass it, you get what you pay for…

A tat that says “No regerts”, a year in prison, no progress towards the goals that will change your life…see what I’m sayin’?

Full disclosure here, when I spoke with my business coach for the first time & she told me her rate I balked. I balked hard. But after wasting another few months of my life I realized that I could not do it alone AND I was worth the damn investment. And I am telling you right now, with 100% honesty, that investment is one of the best I’ve made in my entire life. She got me out of my own head & moved me forward in ways I could’ve never done on my own. You can read about my experience here.

While it’s true that you’re paying for the coach’s time, experience & expertise, that’s not what you’re really paying for. What you’re really paying for is results. You’re paying to finally break free of the pain & frustration of being forever stuck where you are. You’re paying for someone who knows the way to illuminate it for you so that you can see where you’re headed with clarity & purpose. You’re paying to propel yourself forward with an unstoppable momentum towards the you & the life that you have always known you were meant for.

And when you look at it that way, how can it not be worth it, how can you be not worth it?

I remember when personal trainers became a thing, and I couldn’t imagine why someone would pay for that. Yet when we finally did, it really changed the way I thought about it. Because you don’t know those things.

Every.Word.You’ve.Written.Is.100%.Correct! During our first coaching session…yeah, readers, I can attest to the badlands of being coached by Debbie…I felt like we were engaging in therapy. But, then, I realized it was only therapeutic in that I was reaching back in order to GO FORWARD! Those sessions became the high points of my weeks as I looked forward to what we would accomplish…always with you gently guiding me toward my goal. And, I am getting ready to post my eighth post! I NEVER would have begun a blog if it hadn’t been for your encouragement. I would have continued to find… Read more »

I’m so proud of you, my friend, for tackling this new skill that is helping you to help others!

I think EVERYONE could benefit from a life coach (AND therapy AND medication, ha ha). I don’t know why we all think we can figure EVERYTHING out ourselves.

It’s great you have found coaches work for you! And I love that bright pink blazer 🙂 we have access to a bunch of free services at work, one of which is coaching, but I’ve never used it as I’m happy where life is at right now 🙂 I’ll try remember to use it if I do want to make some changes though 🙂

Hope you are having a great weekend 🙂 We have another birthday party today!

I have often wondered about this – I’ve never used a coach because the cost has always put me off, but I can see that if you have a goal that you’re struggling to reach it would be well worth the investment. I love how your amazing pink hair matches your blazer!
