When Your Boyfriend Jeans Become Skinny Jeans + Tiered Sundress & Silk Cami

A lifetime ago…back at the end of February (seriously, every month in 2020 has been equivalent to six months in a normal year) I was well aware that I needed to lose a few pounds…

THE STORY

…Not because of some preconceived societal expectation of body size, nor because of body image issues, it was simply because I was running several pounds above my fighting weight i.e. the weight I’m most comfortable at. The clothes were starting to get just a bit tight and I knew I needed to get it reined in before it got out of control.

Enter quarantine…

tiered sundress_Birkenstock sandals

Yes, I know, quarantine wasn’t kind to many of us in regard to excess poundage. However, I was already behind the eight ball when the entire planet shut down. I realize that there were a boatload of maniacs out there who used the quarantine time-out to whip their bodies into goddess-like condition (or at least they said they did on the ‘gram), but believe me, I wasn’t one of them. I personally used the time to eat Cheetos like it was my job.

It didn’t help that the entire first month I was a baking beast. We were never without some sort of baked good sitting on the kitchen counter. Ironically, I hate all things culinary and I’m gluten sensitive to boot so where the baking came from I have no clue. Some sort of brain short circuit maybe. On a side note, my daughter & I did make these freakin’ amazing chocolate chip cookie cheesecake bars…dayum were they yummy! And totally worth the gluten-induced stomach pain that resulted I must say.

Anyhow, it’s no secret that I’ve always been a huge fan of comfy clothes, particularly sweats, so needless to say I was not even a little bit sad when sweats (and occasionally whatever I had slept in) became acceptable work attire. As I’m sure you can surmise, the comfy baggy stretchy sweats & leggings did nothing to remind me that perhaps I should step away from the Cheetos for a moment. Add into all of this that I, like everyone else, was confined to the house so the exercise I normally got bopping around a classroom, trotting up & down the steps and sprinting after run away students was no more. The most exercise I got in a day was walking from the couch to the refrigerator.

I did actually try to make sure that I put jeans on at least once a week just to keep me honest. They did (and do) still fit, so no worries, right? Um, no. They do fit, however in November they were the perfect slouchy boyfriend jeans…see Exhibit A. Now? They’re skinny jeans…see Exhibit B. I’m currently working on getting things back in line, but dropping 15 pounds when you’re 55 as opposed to when you’re say 35, is like attempting to swim the English Channel when you’re used to floating on a raft in the kiddie pool.

Why am I whining about something that in the grand scheme of things is truly inconsequential? You’ll find the explanation in the outfit section below…

THE OUTFIT

I could’ve easily told ya’ll that I layered this pretty lace trimmed cami under my tiered sundress to make it more interesting, but I’ve never lied to you before so I won’t start now.

I layered it underneath because the top two buttons refused to stay buttoned due to the spare baggage I’m carrying around. While it does make the dress extra pretty, it was actually more a matter of me not wanting the girls to pop out to say “hello” at an inopportune time, say in the produce aisle at the grocery store.

The last time I wore this particular dress was back in the Fall. Because of the aforementioned button front, it does layer well and looked particularly pretty layered over a burgundy tulle skirt. Note the top two buttons are staying closed on their own…lol.

The dress would’ve have looked way cooler I think, paired with these fab ankle tie sandals, however in the interest of keepin’ it real I’m showing it with the Birks that I actually wore it with. And I was too lazy to go up to the attic for the ankle tie sandals, so there’s that.

THE TIP

I’m a huge fan of silk cami’s. They are pretty on their own as a top, but they also make the perfect lightweight layering piece under dresses, button down shirts and sweaters.

I know! I never ever baked! I love to cook but baking? No. And now I want every weekend something sweet with my coffee! And it all shows up at my belly!! I hate it. So I feel you! But you are still looking gorgeous!

I did the same thing – baked like a maniac and because I was already up a few pounds it just didn’t help. I was still exercising but you know, you cannot exercise away a bad diet. In May I reached my boiling point and got back to healthy eating. It certainly isn’t easier as we age, and gosh I hate that!
This dress is so pretty on you – since it will be 99 degrees here today I can say I’d wear it in a heartbeat to keep cool!

Haha, gosh, nailed it! I started quarantine a few pounds up because of my bad knee. Plus, we’re in a tiny apartment now, so walking from the bedroom to the living room/kitchen = 2-4 steps. Yeah, I wasn’t one of those workout goddesses, either. One day I got “dressed” and realized my crumpled linen shorts and t-shirt didn’t look any better than my pjs! Love that pretty dress on you, girl, undone buttons and all!

You are amazing! And, other than Adele, I believe we all baked and cooked our way thru the quarantine. Thank you for your honesty!

Well, I’ll just join the chorus! First, you are gorgeous in this dress, cami or not! Second, I love to bake and always seem to eat more of my Christmas cookies than anyone else. So, I, too, was fighting those pounds. Then, the Rona hit. And, I didn’t bake for a bit because we were staying home. Then, I discovered the joys of shopping and picking up curbside…groceries, that is. Now, sometimes, items aren’t in stock so baking my own bread was not on the table. But, chocolate chip cookies and snickerdoodle cookies and sugar cookies…well, they were on the… Read more »

YOu look splendid in this adorable dress!! And, boy do I get you…I too turned into a baking beast…and my cool loose jeans turned into skinny jeans. Oh well! Getting back on track now (but honestly…I indulged and had such a good time lol). Have a great week xx

first of all, you are such a pretty lady! always love receiving your posts in my inbox! and just last week, on Monday, i decided it was time to reign in on the quarantine eating–it was time–i gained 10 lbs…i would not be considered overweight by others, but for myself, i saw what the scale did….and what i really did poorly during quarantine, was pouring more wine than usual–every night with my husband….and we decided it was time to cut out the weekly night drinking, and eat vegan m-thursday, pescatarian fridays, and anything goes saturday and sundays…it;s our new approach,… Read more »

You look just as Fantastic as you did a couple of years ago. It’s almost impossible to shed any amount of weight after 60 and I am proof of that. So, take it easy on yourself and if you must, you still have time to do it. Enjoy July. . .

I highly recommend a plant based diet. I have Celiac and Type 1 diabetes and have always been a bit fluffy but going plant based has made a huge difference in my weight and how I feel. I suggest watching the films Forks over Knives and Game Changers. You are still beautiful just the way you are but I’m sure you probably don’t want to have to replace your wardrobe…Ha!

Love the barefoot pic. And that dress is dreamy. I wore my first maxi of the season a week ago and felt so comfortable in it. Always before I felt like a maxi=formal. Always felt overdressed. Maybe I am finally growing up. Thankful that all the too baggy boyfriend jeans I purged in January are still in my car trunk because the consignment store is closed. Might have to pull those babies out and start wearing them. We are still pretty well locked up tight down here in El Paso with no sign that life will ever return to normal.… Read more »

We did some of the baking thing, hubby was supposed to make scones. It was funny everyone was baking at the same time, I coudnt get flour or yeast. This sundress is perfect for summer Debbie. I love the casual look with the birks and pretty print. I am all about dresses in this heat.

Oh you gorgeous thing! I am loving this dress and that little extra element of the silk and lace cami beneath your dress. It is funny how we come to discover these wonderful styling tricks out of necessity like the extra quarantine pounds. I have been so sedentary that my joints hurt! But my stock in Doritos has gone way up. Haha. Actually I don’t own stock in Doritos but maybe I should. Actually, I guess it would be Frito-Lay stock which I am sure has gone up in value with your Cheeto habit and my Dorito habit! Ha. Thanks… Read more »

that’s such a pretty dress and it’s good you thought of a way you could still wear it! 🙂 I find my weight naturally fluctuates so I’m not fussed about any changes after iso – My jeans all have a bit of stretch in them and I love an elasticated maxi skirt so I’ll never run out of clothes to wear no matter what I lose or gain, haha! 😉 I mean if I could wear a lot of my wardrobe in the third trimester with both my boys I am pretty set to have another piece of chocolate, ha!… Read more »
