Print Mixing For Beginners

print mixing for beginners

It’s been a hot second since I did a straight up outfit/style post, so I decided today was as good a day as any…

KEEPING MY WORD…TO MYSELF

Way back in 2020 (how is it that it’s only 2 years ago, but seems like it’s been a lifetime?) after weeks & weeks of sweats, I promised myself that the majority of the days of the week I would actually get dressed. I kept that promise then & I’m keeping it now that I’m no longer working full time. My time is now truly my own & it would be so easy to slip into bad habits.

Of course I still have sweats days, but more often than not, I put thought & effort into what I wear. Looking put together feels almost as good as keeping my word to myself.

PRINT MIXING FOR BEGINNERS

This particular outfit is a good mini-lesson in print mixing for beginners. I’ve been mixing prints for years, but I know that many women are more than a little bit intimidated by the idea of it.

If you’re a beginner print mixer, one of the easiest ways to ease into it is to wear one piece of printed clothing paired with a smaller dose of a different print via shoes or accessories. In this particular outfit, the leopard print kimono paired with the floral Doc’s provides just the smallest dose of print mixing. On a side note, leopard print works as a neutral so it’s easy to combine it with pretty much any other print i.e. florals, plaids, stripes, etc.

Another more subtle way to mix your prints is to make sure both prints have the same color palette, like the floral cami & plaid flannel shirt that I styled in this post. The colors are so similar that the prints blend seamlessly.

Probably the easiest method to dip your toe into print mixing is to wear a piece that comes “pre-mixed” like this dress/tunic. Since the body of the dress is a white floral print & the bodice is a black boho print, the mixing was done for me…it doesn’t get any easier than that my friend!

Once upon a time, I read this blog that taught me to take chances on my clothing…to mix patterns and unusual colors. I did, and I became so much happier and more confident in my daily life! Oh, wait…that was you! My look (and closet) is such a reflection of the woman you helped me to become! Thanks, my gorgeous friend!

Ooh, you know I love a good print mix! I’m REALLY in love with the plaid flannel and burnout velvet cami, that’s like chef’s kiss! But…but…”My time is now truly my own & it would be so easy to slip into bad habits” you’re not ACTUALLY saying that staying in your nightgown for days on end is a BAD THING, are you?? Cuz if wearing my nightgown for three days in a row is bad…then I don’t wanna be right 🙂 Seriously though, I look at it as environmentalism (queen of spin, right here). Washing less, using fewer detergents, less… Read more »
