Puffer Coat & Flannel Shirt: The Good Side Of The News

Puffer coat, flannel shirt & Shoe Jewlz.

In my last post I talked about being a good human and how rare it sometimes seems that it is to see good humans in the world…

THE STORY

…My friend Jodie (who coincidentally also came up with today’s Ageless Style Link Up theme) mentioned how the media isn’t necessarily helpful since so much of the news seems to be negative. While I am a huge believer in the importance of the news and media, it is true that much of what we see and read is not so pleasant. We know in our hearts that there is still good in the world because we see it all around us in our daily lives, but the negativity can become overwhelming.

I so love when I see a heartwarming and beautiful story pop up in my news feed, so I know that the good stuff exists. I made it my mission to unearth a few feel good news stories to share with all of you today so that we can all take a minute to revel in the beauty that does still exist in the world.

First up is this story I saw last week about a veteran’s funeral in Texas. A funeral is good news? No, not the gentleman’s death, but what happened afterwards is a true testament to the patriotism and kindness of complete strangers. It is estimated that over 1,000 strangers attended the funeral when word got out that the Vietnam era veteran would be buried alone as officials had been unable to find his family.

Next is the story of Candice Payne from Chicago. During last week’s polar vortex she paid for 30 hotel rooms to help get homeless people off the streets and to safety and warmth. Her efforts snowballed and the rest of the story is truly amazing. This story is a testimony to how one person can truly be the change.

The final story is on a much smaller scale, but dog lover that I am it gave my all kinds of warm fuzzies. A marathon runner in Thailand happened upon a lost abandoned puppy about 7 miles into her 26 mile marathon. There were no houses nor people around and the poor little ball of fluff was just wandering lost on the road. As the other runners ran around the puppy, this incredible woman picked it up, cradled it in her arm and ran the remaining almost 20 miles carrying the puppy. I’m telling you, if this one doesn’t bring a tear to your eye then I don’t know what will.

THE OUTFIT

When Jodie chose “Puffer Coats/Vests” for this month’s Ageless Style Link Up, I knew this coat would be the star. I briefly considered my purple puffer vest that I haven’t worn for years because I had already featured this puffer coat that I received c/o Happy Goat Lucky a few months ago. I decided to go with the coat again though because it has become my go-to coat this Winter…I love it that much. In the original post I styled it with a work outfit, so this time I went the casual route with a flannel shirt and jeans. Totally coincidentally, I was also wearing a flannel shirt in the original post, but styled it with work wear.

The coat that I’m wearing is the Miranda from Happy Goat Lucky. The reason that I don’t own much in the puffer coat department is because of the bulk; I hate feeling like I can’t move. This coat, as well as the rest of their coats, are far more streamlined than your typical puffer (down) coat. What it lacks in bulk it definitely doesn’t lack in warmth. I’m not kidding when I say this is my go-to coat…I wear it almost daily…and it kept me plenty warm during the recent attack of the polar vortex. I love the longer length, and the fact that it zips up from the bottom makes it easy to wear.

The rest of the look is a casual outfit that I wore for going out to dinner with my boys (my son and his fiance). It was unintentional, but the whole outfit with the exception of the boots and super fancy boot bling, is American Eagle. Their skinny jeans are just as soft and comfortable as their Tomgirl jeans and the same goes for AE flannels…super soft and cozy. The peek of lace underneath is one of their bralettes, and as I’ve said before, their bralettes are perfect for large and small busted ladies alike.

The aforementioned shoe bling were a gift from SSY Designs. Shoe Jewlz come in a wide variety of styles and are perfect for dressing up any footwear from plain pumps to Bearpaw boots. Although I haven’t tried it yet, the stretchy elastic band also makes them a cool option as a bracelet depending upon the design that you go with. They are a super simple way to dress up any outfit; from a fancy night out look to basic flannel and denim.

THE TIP

If you live in an area with actual Winter, I have to say that a puffer/down coat is an excellent investment. Just be sure to look for a coat with a more streamlined feminine cut to avoid looking like you’re walking around wrapped in a comforter.

I had heard about the funeral and was deeply moved. Didn’t know about the other two though. How incredibly kind of that woman to pay for hotel rooms, I bet the people who received those rooms felt like they were in heaven, we need more people willing to go above and beyond like that, it’s so inspiring. I am touched too by the runner who ran the rest of the marathon with that sweet pup. Wow! I cannot even imagine. I love the embellishments on your boots – I have never seen anything so pretty on a boot before –… Read more »

These three stories almost brought me to tears, Debbie! I love to read about such things because most of the news, as you say, is so negative and depressing.
Love the outfit! I’m a huge fan of puffer jackets, that I have several and I wear them ALL the time in the winter!

OMG, the boot bling though! How much fun is that! I do love my puffer coat all winter long. I only have one, but if we are going to stay in this arctic tundra forever, I might need to be investing in a few more puffer coats in various colors. You look adorable and warm and cozy, my friend. And what wonderful feel good stories. There really is so much goodness and kindness all around us, we just need to pay more attention to it and not get too caught up in all the ugly that is out there. Thank… Read more »

First off, this is exactly the type of news we need daily. It’s just heartwarming and makes us want to be better people. Maybe you should be our newscaster from now on. You find the best stories. That puppy one?? Now that’s dedication and love.
And since I’m a shoeaholic…those boot bling things….I need those!! Well, need is probably not the right word. Want? Crave? Those are probably more realistic words…ha ha!!
And I know what you mean about the Happy Goat Lucky coats.

Hey Debbie,
I really enjoyed your post and couldn’t agree with you and Jodie more about how the impact negative news can have on us, and lately, it seems unending. I’m all about celebrating the under-shared good news story and thank you for doing so.

As for your stunning puffer look, that coat is unbelievably chic and cool. I love the color, length, detailing and that hood… so fab!

Keep it up, beautiful.

I had seen the marathon runner and puppy story last week and you know it touched my heart. 🙂 I enjoyed reading about the other heart-warming stories, as well. I have recently been trying to replace negative, gossipy type reading with more positive and encouraging outlets. I am now checking in with Tiny Buddha, Good News Network, and The Oatmeal regularly and am looking to add more to my list.

As always, you are looking wonderful in your plaid and distressed jeans. I am loving the boot jewelry – so pretty!

Love this coat so much! I recently won a coat from Happy Goat Lucky and I’m anxiously waiting to see how wonderful it is. I have a black long puffer coat from years ago that folds up in a little bag – great for travel. It looks a lot like your coat in the post. They are so warm – it’s amazing!

Thanks for sharing the good news – I especially loved the marathoner carrying the puppy for 20 miles! I’d read that story too. Stay warm!

I remember either reading or hearing about those stories during the past week and – gosh – it was so nice. I mean, daily news can definitely be overwhelming.

Your coat looks so very warm and cozy. We don’t have harsh winters here, but there were a couple of days where I wanted to scream from the cold. LOL

I love that you shared some happy stories – what a great idea! The best puffer coats have a hood, I think, and yours is all kinds of fabulous. So beautiful!

I love a good feel good story. Thanks for sharing! I really want a puffer jacket like the one you have, but have no where to wear it where I live. But am currently (even as I type this) wearing a puffer jacket that just comes to my waist…warm but not too warm. 🙂

Oh, I love all your feel-good stories. I wish there was a paper or news show that was JUST “Good News.”

And leave it to you to introduce us to BOOT BRACELETS!!!

I’d heard about the good samaritan from Chicago during the vortex weather but not the others, these articles were nice to read. I also liked your coat, you make the puffer coat look good! I have one and would like to take a picture in it BUT it always look frumpy on me, maybe one day I’ll hit like you have! Thank again for great post.

Thank you for sharing those heart warming stories. We don’t hear enough good news these days. So proud of the good folks in Killeen to show up for that veteran’s funeral. Killeen is the nearest town to Ft. Hood, where we were stationed years ago. I know everyone in Killeen and Ft. Hood feels a sense of gratitude for fellow service people.

You are so photogenic! And can make a flannel shirt and puffer parka look like haute couture. Love the boot bling, kind of like reverse spurs only prettier!

Those are all great stories of human”kind”. It’s so refreshing to hear things like that and know there are still good people in the world. Love your puffer style. I don’t miss having to bundle up in my big puffer coat anymore. Thankfully a vest is all I need. XO
