This week we’re wrapping up the Soul Style series. Week 1 we learned exactly what Soul Style is & why it’s so important for you to know yours. Week 2 we learned all the details of the Yin styles & in Week 3 we did a deep dive into the Yang styles…
SO, HOW DO I FIGURE OUT MY SOUL STYLE
As I covered in the previous posts, there are a total of eight Soul Style archetypes. Four of them have a more feminine vibe (the Yin styles) & four have a more masculine vibe (Yang styles). The Yin & Yang aren’t related to gender in any way; they are personality traits mixed with the energy that we use to move through the world. We’re all a blend of both energies, so in order to know your true Soul Style you need to know both your predominant Yin and Yang style. Those two blended together give you your own personal Soul Style a.k.a. your individual roadmap to getting dressed easily & in a way that is true to who you really are.
Even though we all have a unique Soul Style, that’s not to say that we don’t enjoy dabbling in other styles. For example, I have a Bohemian/Rebellious Rock & Roll Soul Style, but I sometimes lean towards Natural Relaxed (especially when I’m hanging out at home) & occasionally I’ll throw in some Creative too. Here are some examples:
Bohemian/Rebellious Rock & Roll
Natural Relaxed (with a little Boho thrown in)
Creative (mixed with Rebellious Rock & Roll)
Those of you who have been around awhile know that I almost all of the time move through life very much in my Boho/Rebellious Rock & Roll vibe. My second highest Yang score was Natural Relaxed & Yin was Creative, so like I mentioned I’m pretty comfortable in those realms too. But I think we can all agree I’m most known for my boho with a little badass thrown in aesthetic. You can see from the examples that even when I’m pulling from a different style category, there’s still an underlying vibe of my true Soul Style shining through.
You’ll never see me wearing pieces from the Classic Traditional, Romantic Glam, Dramatic or Elegant styles. There’s not a thing wrong with those style categories & they look beautiful on other women, but they’re simply not me. Not one of my answers on the quiz came from those categories. I can tell you from past experience, when I’ve worn outfits from one of those categories because the situation called for it i.e. wearing Classic Traditional pieces for interviews or meetings, I felt like I was wearing a costume. I felt awkward, uncomfortable & lacking in confidence. The same would happen if a woman who is predominantly Elegant tried wearing something Rebellious Rock & Roll.
Imagine trying to get dressed each day when your closet is full of items that don’t mesh with your Soul Style. It would make getting dressed an unpleasant chore & you would move through your day feeling uncomfortable, incompetent & not at all like yourself. That my friend, is why knowing your Soul Style is so so important.
NOW ON TO DISCOVERING YOUR SOUL STYLE
My first exposure to the Yin & Yang of style was during my personal stylist course last year. It was referred to as “personality style” and while it all made a lot of sense to me & I really loved the concept, I felt like the categories were too broad & they needed to be broken down into more categories as well as refined with more detail.
After months of research & practice runs I finally developed a quiz that I truly believe gets down to the real depths of your own unique style & how that style fits within the context of who you are.
