THE STORY
…Those of us who’ve been around the block a time or two already know this. In a perfect world doing the right thing should be easy because, well, it’s the right thing. It goes without saying though that we don’t live in a perfect world.
I always try to do the right thing; that doesn’t necessarily mean that I always do, but I always at least make an effort. The difficulty comes in when we’re faced with people who are hell-bent on doing the wrong thing for their own skewed personal reasons. It’s situations like that where somehow in doing what’s right we become perceived as the bad guy, the troublemaker, the one who’s in the wrong.
I think that those are the times when it’s even more critical for us to follow our moral compass, fight through the bullsh*t and do the hard thing…the right thing.
Just yesterday I had a conversation with my daughter. She was involved in a scenario wherein she had absolutely done the right thing. She did what the adults in her life had always told her to do, and most importantly she followed her gut instinct and her heart. As it turned out, the situation was turned around and twisted and my daughter was made to feel that she was in the wrong.
Her question to me was, “I don’t understand. Why am I the bad guy when all that I did was the right thing?” It broke my heart, but unfortunately it’s one of those life lessons that we all have to learn at some point. My response to her was, “Baby, I’m sorry. But doing the right thing is the right thing, so you can never stop doing it.” It takes courage to stand alone my friends, but sometimes that is exactly what we have to do. If you are able to go to sleep at night with a clear mind and a clear heart that is what really matters. And who knows, maybe if enough of us take on the hard things…the right things…it might start to tilt the world back to it’s proper alignment.
THE OUTFIT
Several years ago I found this plaid slip dress on the clearance rack at Target for about $8. I gotta say it’s one of the best $8 I’ve ever spent. I’ve worn it all year ’round and it’s the perfect base for print mixing.
That’s what I did today, although the print mix is subtle. The velvet embroidered jacket that I received from Caite & Kyla was perfect for an added layer of warmth and coverage over top. The day that I wore this it was cold although not bone-chilling so it was just right. I’m a sucker for just about anything velvet so I was super excited when I found this in my Fall/Winter gift box.
Probably 99% of the time when I wear a dress or skirt in the Winter, I wear over the knee boots on the bottom. There is no better way to finish off a cold weather look than otk boots. Not only are they cute with a touch of edgy, but they’re also the easiest way to keep your legs warm when the weather isn’t.
THE TIP
If you haven’t already, consider giving over the knee boots a try. They are one of those items that strike fear into the hearts of the less adventurous, but there are so many styles available that there is truly no fear of veering into Pretty Woman territory. They work with everything from dresses and skirts to jeans and leggings, and are an easy way to stay warm and stylish when the Winter winds are blowing.
