Wrap Maxi Skirt & Tank Top: Keepin’ It Real

Wrap maxi skirt, tank top, and ankle tie sandals.

I realize that I often complain about taking outfit shots in the cold, although admittedly snow does make for a gorgeous background…

THE STORY

…Quite honestly though, the flip side of the coin poses just as many photographic obstacles. No, I am not complaining about Summer per se. It is after all, my favorite season after Fall. The problem isn’t Summer. The problem is temperatures 90 or above coupled with 92% humidity…ya, you read that right…92%. I personally am more of an 80 degree with low humidity kinda girl.

The day that I took these I had worked all day, on the second floor, in a classroom with twelve middle school kids, three other adults and no air conditioning…in 90 degree heat with 93% humidity. The papers on my desk were literally curling up from being damp. Needless to say, I was not feeling super cute by the time I took these shots.

My makeup had melted to places I don’t normally wear makeup, like say, my cleavage. My hair was a massive ball of frizz that even a claw clip couldn’t tame, my clothes were sticking to me in awkward places, my allergies were off the rails so I had a headache and runny nose and my bra could’ve easily been wrung out. Delightful mental image, yes?

I almost didn’t take photos after work on this particular day. I figured that as much as I hate doing it, I could re-create the outfit on the weekend when I wasn’t feeling so much like a sweaty hot mess. But you know what? I do my best to keep things real around here. I write from the heart, my clothes are often wrinkled because I’ve actually worn them all day and my makeup is typically well on it’s way to be smudged off. So I figured why the hell not?

If these shots aren’t keepin’ it real I don’t know what is. I was sweaty, icky and not feeling particularly fabulous and who amongst us hasn’t felt that way? I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all felt like a giant hot mess at one point or another. The only difference I suppose is that I am weird enough to take pictures of myself and share them with the world when I’m feeling that way. It’s just one more example of how we’re all more alike than we are different. The setting may be different, but the challenges are the same. So the next time your makeup puddles in your cleavage, just remember, we’re all right there with you. No judgments here my friends.

THE OUTFIT

This skirt is destined to be one of my BFF’s this Summer, so when Jonet suggested “Maxi Dresses & Skirts” as our Ageless Style Link Up theme this month, I knew this was the little beauty that I was going to feature. It is so incredibly lightweight that it feels like wearing next to nothing, and the pretty mixed print camouflages any potential see through-ness. It’s completely no fuss…just wrap and go…although I did add a small hidden safety pin like I always do with wrap skirts to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions.

The simple white tank was the top of choice more for survival than fashion. Had it not been so hot I  would’ve probably went with a graphic tee, but I wanted as little material covering me as I could get away with so the white tank top it was. Also, had I not been at work the footwear would have been Birks, but I added my sweet little ankle tie sandals to fancy things up a bit.

THE TIP

Loose flowy skirts are the perfect solution to scorching hot temperatures. Sometimes even shorts are too uncomfortable in the heat, and since it’s frowned upon to go out in public sans bottoms, a flowy skirt can save you from an arrest for public indecency. The key is too choose a skirt that skims the body and is made of a lightweight material. Simply toss a tank top and sandals on like you would with shorts and you’re good to go.

I sympathise with the humidity – my hair was shocking on those humid days – I had no idea how many broken ends I had all wanting to pop up out of my hair do and wave hello. Frizz doesn’t quite express it. Wild frizz is a bit closer… That’s a fabulous skirt Debbie and those shoes are to die for! xx

Debbie, you look gorgeous. And there is no hint of you being a sweaty mess in the photos lol! I love wearing long floaty skirts in the heat too – much better than shorts, I think!

Oh, that we could all look so fabulous while being a “hot mess”! I agree that skirts are cooler than shorts. Your double buckle belt and tie sandals add so much style. I hope you were able to get into some A/C after your photo shoot. Thanks for sharing.

Well, you are the darn cutest puddle of sweat that I have ever seen! I hear you though, Debbie. I cannot even stand when temperatures creep above 70 degrees. That is just too hot for me. Keep it between 50 and 70 and I am a very happy girl. I was such a hot mess last weekend at my brother-in-law’s wedding all dolled up with about 15 pounds of fake pearls draped around my neck in 90 degree weather. I felt pretty but I did not smell pretty by the end of the day! Ha. Beautiful hot messes unite! Thanks… Read more »

Well you just described how I live my life – sweating, sticky, and disgusting. Welcome to Florida where we have a heat index above 100 each day and crazy humidity. It’s a guarantee from April – November that I have sweat dripping down my back in all of my pictures! Another blogger once referred to wearing shorts and pants in Florida as having “swamp ass” and that is spot on, I prefer a skirt or dress.
Despite all the heat and sweaty conditions you look fabulous as always! Real life is the best life!!!

From these photos and how gorgeous you look, one would never guess how hot it was and all the mishaps you went through with the makeup, humidity, etc. Like you I prefer the weather between 80-87 degrees max with little humidity. And girlfriend I always love your backgrounds no matter what season. Love that picture-perfect first photo. And how beautiful is your maxi and sandals. Great theme chosen by Jonet, this month. =) The first Sunday of each month I co-host a linkup with 2 friends so please join this month’s “The Sunday Showcase” (linked below) and welcome by each… Read more »

You are gorgeous, even when your make up is down around your cleavage. Ha, ha. I love your honesty and golly, sister, if it’s not 90’s and humid, it’s raining to beat the band or we are freezing our assets off! The joys of being a fashion blogger. Love that cute skirt! – Amy

I know exactly what you mean! I dont want to complain about weather all the time on the blog, but geez, high humidity and high temps are not a fashion bloggers friend! at least for me! Having said that, you look great in your skirt, and white top. I love the blue print and it looks like a comfy outfit too. Nice blue pedi! I got mine in peach and its too light, I need something more bold. I always feel like im not wearing makeup by the time pictures are taken in the heat. we do our best :-))… Read more »

Your skirt is beyond fabulous and I can see why you will want to wear it often this summer! It looks so good with the plain white tank and bare feet. 🙂 Goodness, Debbie, I cannot even imagine working without AC. I don’t know how you do it. Love how you kept the photos real – it actually adds to the charm of this look.

Such a pretty skirt, the white vest looks great with it. You certainly don’t look hot and bothered…I don’t know how you didn’t faint in that heat with no air con! Thanks for linking up 🙂
