If you live in an area that has all 4 seasons, then you know that the struggle is real. Knowing how to dress for Spring weather is a necessity if you want to be comfortable all day long…
HOW TO DRESS FOR SPRING WEATHER
In a 4 season environment there are two transitions that are particularly tricky; summer to fall & winter to spring. Knowing how to dress for those two transitional periods isn’t just a life skill, it’s an art form. Since it’s April, this post is going to be focused on the winter to spring transition.
The tips I’m about to share are all general enough that they’ll translate to pretty much any of the Soul Style categories. If you aren’t sure what your unique Soul Style is, you can take take the Soul Style quiz here to find out. You can also read more about Soul Style in the series I recently shared. Here’s where you’ll find Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 & Part 4.
1. Play with colors & prints
While wearing all the colors & all the prints year ’round is perfectly acceptable (as a matter of fact, I encourage it), there are certain colors & prints that we associate more with warmer weather. I’m lookin’ at you pastel shades & sweet floral prints. The above shot was taken a few years ago on a rather snowy May (ya, I said May) day. Since it was cold I wore a cozy sweater, however said cozy sweater was light pink. I paired it with my pink suede Puma’s & a springy floral print bag. Put all together, I had a warm enough outfit for a chilly day, but with a definite nod to spring via the light pink & floral print.
So on those days in March, April & even May, when your head’s full of ALL the spring things, but winter is still throwing its end of the season tantrums pull out your pastel sweaters, blazers, pants…hell, even shoes if there’s not a lot of snow. Add in some pretty spring florals & you’ve got yourself a spring look that won’t freeze your ass off.
2. Get creative with footwear (don’t forget about the socks)
I do loveee all of my boots, but by the time March rolls around I’m more than ready for some sandal action. Problem is it’s usually still a bit too chilly out for full on sandals. Enter the peep toe boot. It’s like if your favorite ankle boots & sandals had a love child. Kind of like the best of both worlds.
If it’s too cold even for peep toes & you’re feelin’ sassy, why not try them with a pair of fun socks? That way you’re bringing in the “winter’s over, let’s wear sandals vibe” while still dodging a case of frostbite on your toes.
Another good alternative to winter boots is the more spring friendly cutout boot. You’ve got yourself covered with a full boot, but the fun cutouts allow some of that spring sunshine in.
3. Layers are your bff
I layer my outfits pretty much all year, varying the weight & texture of the pieces by season. But layers are non-negotiable during the seasonal transitions. I kid you not, in NW PA it can be 25° in the morning & 70° by midafternoon. Hence the need for layers.
Lighter weight jackets are a no-brainer when it comes to layering. One of my favorite styles of jacket to layer is my moto jackets. I have several of them in different colors & since they’re unlined faux leather or suede they add just the right amount of warmth & coverage to a pretty spring dress when the temperature still isn’t cooperating.
Make sure to think outside of the box when your looking for pieces to layer. Sure, I could’ve just layered the sundress above underneath the plaid shirt & maybe even a sweater. BUT how much more fun is it layered under the shirt AND over the tulle skirt? A sundress layered over a skirt would most likely be way too much for a July outfit, but it’s the perfect way to add some unexpected badassery to an April look.
And let’s not forget about throwing some fun pieces over a pair of jeans or pants. While it might still be too cool outside for your favorite little spring dress on it’s own, throwing on a pair of jeans underneath is a sure bet for keeping you warm while still looking ready for all the spring things.
Another thing to keep in mind is that you’re not limited to just one layer. I say layer away with wild abandon…especially if there’s going to be a 30° difference between when you leave the house in the morning & come back in the afternoon. When going for several layers at once, remember to keep each piece light to mid-weight. If you get yourself too bulked up, you’ll be walking around looking all stiff like a robot & nobody needs that in their life.
Think chiffon, lighter weight knits, thinner cotton & maybe make one or two of the underlayers sleeveless to further cut down on any bulkiness. Several layers give you the option of removing pieces as the temperature climbs throughout the day.
