Soul Style Series Part 3~The Yang (Masculine) Styles

soul style

Welcome back to Part 3 of my Soul Style series! Before we dive in, I want to apologize for getting this post out a day late. I started feeling icky last week & by the weekend I was full-on miserable. It took both a doctor & dentist appointment on Monday to determine whether I had a sinus infection or an abscessed tooth. Turned out it’s the sinus infection from hell, but fortunately I’m dosed up on antibiotics now & on my way back to fully functioning. With that out of the way, let’s move on to the good stuff…

A LIL’ RECAP

Two weeks ago in Part 1 of the series, I shared a brief introduction to what Soul Style is & why it’s important. Last week in Part 2 I shared all the juicy details about the four Soul Styles that have a more feminine energy (the Yin styles). If you missed either of those, I suggest reading them first so that today’s information makes more sense to you.

As I mentioned last week, the yin & yang energies aren’t related to gender. We each have at least  some of both energies within us & these energies come out through our personalities, style & how we go about our lives. Yin energy is more emotion & self-expression based while Yang energy is logic & reasoning based.

Since we carry both energies within us, usually we’ll feel aligned with one of the styles from both the Yin & the Yang Soul Style archetypes. That’s not to say we don’t occasionally dabble in the other Soul Styles though. I’ll use myself as an example…

My Yin Soul Style is very much Bohemian & my Yang is Rebellious/Rock & Roll. The majority of the time I dress in pieces from these two styles. However, I also wear & love pieces that fall under Romantic/Glam & the Natural Soul Styles. BUT I feel most like myself wearing things that are a mix of Boho/Rebel. Those are also the style of the majority of pieces in my wardrobe even though there are a few things from other styles mixed in. Make sense?

If you read last week’s post, you may have already felt an affinity for one of the Yin styles, so today let’s take a look at where you might fall in the Yang styles, shall we?

THE YANG SOUL STYLES

soul style

Theatrical, striking, bold; lots of high-contrast colors & shades; stiff, crisp & structured fabrics; always looks expensive & high quality; dramatic bold geometric prints, particularly hounds tooth; dresses to be noticed; sleek & sophisticated; love a good black & white look, also drawn to red; not afraid to wear bold colors as long as it’s on trend; power suits with structured shoulders, bold details, sharp angles; always aware of the latest designers, trends, color palettes; killer heels are a must; sleek geometric jewelry that makes an impact; home decor is also sleek & sophisticated, often very minimalist with a lot of glass & steel   i.e. Lady Gaga, Tilda Swinton

soul style

Poised, sporty, powerful; two different vibes are possible here…regal & elegant or world adventurer, both have a sophisticated air of old money about them; interested in classic investment pieces that will last, not trends; tweeds, corduroy heavy well-made fabrics; long skirts, turtlenecks, well-made trousers, blazers with elbow patches; typically drawn to neutral or deep rich colors; tall riding boots, leather loafers; accessories are minimal, but when worn they are usually heavy, authentic & often vintage; home decor may be English manor-like with oversized leather furniture & substantial wood  i.e. Kate Middleton, Meryl Streep, Julianne Moore

soul style

Creative, unique, rule-breaker; denim (preferably shredded), leather & black lace; black is the predominant color, might add a pop of color if it makes a statement; dark, mysterious, anti-establishment, doesn’t care about fashion trends, dresses to please herself; graphic tees especially band tees, leather moto jackets, distressed jeans; can also lean towards a goth aesthetic; plaid is the favorite print, especially red plaid, pinstripes, animal prints; loves unexpected pairings, mixing rebel pieces with something more traditional for the shock value; heeled over the knee boots, Doc Martens, sky-high platforms; jewelry is always a statement, velvet chokers, thick chains, gothic crosses, chunky jeweled statement necklaces, often layered with wild abandon; home decor leans towards the dark side, lots of gray & black with silver or ivory accents, candleabras, lush fur throw rugs  i.e. Gwen Stefani, Kristen Stewart, Miley Cyrus

soul style

Casual, comfortable, carefree; soft cotton, linen, denim (preferably with stretch), flannel, twill; comfort is key, loves anything practical, easy & grounded; jeans, tee shirts, flannel shirts, cargo pants or any loose fitting comfortable pants; color favorites are blues, greens, browns, neutrals;  dresses up only if required to do so; jewelry & accessories are minimal if any, one small delicate piece like something with natural crystals, feathers or a locket with meaning might be all; low ankle boots & flat shoes like sneakers, backpack as a bag; home decor is comfortable often made of natural materials like stone or wood, thrift store finds, lots of plants  i.e. Jennifer Anniston, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson

Next week, I’ll be wrapping up the Soul Style series for you along with a little surprise…so stay tuned!

I see a lot of that natural relaxed around here, haha. I have grown to incorporate a little more rebel lately. And it’s SO fun.

I tend to wear more natural and relaxed clothing. It suits my retirement lifestyle. If I try to wear overly structured clothing, it makes me feel stiff and uncomfortable.

Hi, Debbie – I am natural and relaxed but I have to add a creative touch in order to not get bored. There’s a lot of rebel in me but I’m not made for black so I’ve been trying to replace all that black in my wardrobe with charcoal and navy (I always thought navy was too conservative for me but I do like the color blue emanating from it.) I like to make a statement or add a surprise to my outfit. I totally love that sheer lacy duster as a layer but since I’m trying to stay away… Read more »
